User Guides Offline maps on a Java Mobile

I know that most of you are familiar with this maps thingy.
Anyway here are the steps that will allow you to have Google/Yahoo maps on mobile which has java capability (usually all of the standard mobiles are having this nowadays) without the need for a GPRS connection
Download the jar file at the following link and install the app on your phone

Mobile GMaps / free download
Using the tools below, create the map files and transfer to phone

Mobile GMaps - Map Tile Caching tools
Edit the settings in mgmaps to point to the folder location.

Here is a little more detailed step by step procedure.
1.Use the map creation tool to generate the map tiles.
Map Creation Tool for MGMaps

On the map select the area and place 4 markers by clicking on the map using the mouse. (You can deselect a pin by clicking on it again)

Once the area is selected, select the
Zoom level: from and to (0 , 16 will do)

Level of detail: (default(fast and rough) is enough)

Type of map: (select your choice)
Click on Generate and it will allow you to download a .map file
2 Download the Gmapmaker setup file and install it.
(I found that gMapMaker is a good tool to generate the maps if you are using windows.I have also tried the perl command tools in linux and those are also working)
Cache Folder -- is the place where the downloaded files will be stored.

Operation Mode -- Mgmaps mode, use a .map file
Press GO and it will ask you to select the map file. Select the map file you have created in the first step and there you go!!!
Let gmapmaker download the tile files.. This will take some time.. Be patient :D
3. Copy the generated cache folder to the mobile's mem stick or to phone mem for faster access.( if you have enuf space in phone memory :eek:hyeah: )

4. Install Mgmaps on your mobile from the jar file.
In the setting select the cache folder that you have stored on the mobile
TIPS

The download size is usually very big and hence it is not advisable to download a big area of map all at once. You can generate .map for different areas in seperate .map files and transfer the folders and put on the phone as separate maps.
For example, if you need map for Chennai... download that area and move to mem stick and name the folder as chennai.Do the same for blore and name the folder as blore. You can alternate betweeen each map by just selecting the required map folder in the settings section of Mgmaps from within the app on the phone. In this way you will make the maps load faster on the phone.
Although my phone (W810i) is without GPS , these maps are supposed to work with GPS. (Hoping to buy a new mobile.. Locking on Nokia 5800XM, if the price is right:cool2: )
Thats all folks...
If anyone need any help with installing/generating maps, please contact me and I will help you as far as I can.:)
Here are some additional notes sent by ajay387

1.Download it from this site

Mobile GMaps - Download

2. Download the zip file.

3. Then zip file will contain four files - 1 installer file and 3 jad files

4. If you are using nokia pc suite to transfer then - jad and jar (Installer) files should be named the same (Some s40 phones require that), so if the jad is named mgmaps_signed.jad rename it to mgmaps.jad before uploading installer file to your phone.

5. If u are going to transfer as data storage - then copy installer file and jad file (Remember both should have the same names).

6.Then select the application on the phone->Options->Application Acess->Data Access->Read User data->Ask First Time Only

Thanks for this! Installed this on my Sony w810i and my father's cheap Samsung mobile. Works very well and stunned everyone I showed it to.

I word of warning to everyone who wants to try - Though generated MapCache for any city may only be 30-40MB in your computer, it may take up 300-400MB when copied to mobile. (This is because of small map files occupying large blocks in storage memory cards). So make sure you have this much space in mobile card before you start copying.

hi......... am using w580(dont have a gps modem) and is it possible to work as GPS i tried wht u mentioned bt i cant use it as an gps rather it is working just as stored map .......... can u plz guide me to use as an gps ........... reply ASAP.................

Error while downloading image(Your Ip may be blacklisted by google " !!!! n all i hav is a set of 500 folders in the cache folder with no files.. wats wrong?? and its good if any1 can get me bangalore's maps...

OOPs !!

You cannot use what you have not with you. So unless you have gps in your mobile you cannot use it. But may be there is an option for tracking using mobile towers in the new releases. I do not track this software as I have moved ahead with a 5800 which is having inbuilt gps and maps.

If It is I who has mentioned something like that mistakenly, please forgive me.

Worked like a charm on dad's Samsung corby pop !

Here are the installation notes
  • Download the app from this site. Transfer both the jar and jad file to the phone.
  • Download gmapmaker for pc from this site. Install it.
  • Go to map creation site, generate "Google Road maps " with level of detail as "Fast and Rough", zoom level "0 to 16", save the file *.map
  • Open *.map on gmapmaker, it will download the tiles of map and save it under folder name "MGMapsCache".
  • Transfer the folder to phone memory (15mb on pc might become 30-40 mb on phone).
  • Start the app on phone, settings, map browsing, check stored maps and offline maps, storage path should point to the folder "MGMapsCache" you transfered.
  • Restart the app
  • And lo offline maps are ready !
  • Word of caution select small area like a city (Max) not a whole state.
  • Make diiferent folders like mumbai, chennai, delhi on phone, and store different "MGMapsCache" folder if u want maps of diiferent cities. Change the setting " storage path" to view the map.

I think nokia 5233 is having no GPS..

Glad to see that this thread is helping out some people. I am now on the run to find a good offline map as well as a good converter for android phone (for my xperia x10)

The rat race still goes on.. :eek:hyeah:

When we think that the old dos games are history, it comes back live on the mobiles and we do enjoy it. Weird

Still works, loaded on my 5230. Have very detailed offline maps (taking about a gig on fat16)

Anyone tried MapMyIndia v5 maps yet?

Simple tip for anyone trying this on Symbian phones: set the attributes of the MGMapsCache folder as hidden and system. Doing so will prevent the map tiles from getting scanned by the gallery app of the phone which would otherwise become non responsive and hang while scanning for images.

Can you point which steps did you use to load offline google maps on your 5230. I also want to do the same.

I did all of the above, but when I run the application th map doesn show. Some querries
1) When the whole tile process happened the folder created was in programe file, in gMapmaker. I copied this entire folder to both the phone memory and mmc. Is there a specific folder I have to paste it in ?

Say my memory card is E: then should i have folders like E:\Mumbai, E:\Pune then what folder structure from below is to be used

E:\Mumbai\MGMapsCache\GoogleMap_0 etc etc

OR

E:\Mumbai\GoogleMap_0 etc etc

OR

E:\MGMapsCache\Mumbai\GoogleMap_0 etc etc

Or it can be anything and i have to just give proper path in the application ?

Is the "MGMapsCache" name compulsory ?

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

Also how can i browse the offline maps ?

I mean assuming i am in a no GPS area, like inside office etc but still want to browse the stored offline maps.

Is it possible to browse the offline maps in areas where we dont have GPS connection or say indoors ?

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

Yes we can browse. Just checked.

This is really very good.

^^Similarly i have kept two folders MGMapsCache_Pune and MGMapsCache_Mum for different cities and i was able to browse. Now i will download a hybrid map. The downloading and subsequent copying does take hell lot of time especially if the level of zoom is more.

the downloading took minutes on my 2 mbps connection but the copying to my microsdhc class 2 card took hours and I left it overnight. :(
For me downloading also takes time probably because of my connection being slower than you and also the zoom level i am setting is upto 18 starting from 1
