the upgrade version checks to see if there is a windows folder in your hard drive before installation. If there is such a folder it assumes that you have a prior version of windows available. The interesting thing here is that the windows folder can be an empty folder/trial version of any previous version of windows/ahem version or legitimate version . It does not make any difference !!! . It will be fully legit.

MS has said that prices will be increased. If there isn't enough windows 8 adoption, this upgrade 'offer' may be extended. Cant say for sure. Seems like The retail DVD version wont be available any more . The only way to get it is to download it from Microsoft's site. You need an international credit card (visa/mastercard)

You need a mastercard or visa Creditcard.
Depends on your perspective. I would advice to get a 'ahem' copy of 7 and use it. For the failure that is vista, MS should have given all vista users free upgrade to 7.
If you want to go for 8, just remember that it does not include downgrade rights to 7.

Also, AFAIK, DVD is not included at all in any package.

How much would W7 cost? Yup Vista sucks big-time.
The option screen for W8 that came in front of me showed Internet Download for 1999/- & DVD for 1k. Don't know whether DVD is in addition to 1999/- or solo!
DVD is not included in 1,999. Would suggest to either downgrade to XP for free assuming you have the business or higher edition. Else get 8 and use some programs to make it look like 7, which seems the best option right now, legally.
Have no idea about cost of upgrade for 7.

Personal choice. Unless you try it, you dont know whether you like the metro interface or not. Either way, go for the upgrade and get the free media center key if possible.
Then I guess will wait for a while, my new laptop is in shipment. Shall reach in a couple of days, it has W8, will try it out for some days to decide whether to update the old Lappy too.

There you have a plus point. If the laptop comes with W8, you have downgrade rights.
But W8 would be on new Lappy, how could I get 7 on old ?

Yes its a Sony Vaio, comes with 8 installed. But I would not downgrade 8 to 7 on new Lappy. Are you saying that I could use the downgraded version on old lappy ?
No, the key is meant for the SONY and not the older one, but then, I dont think they (MS) are going to check.

After using Windows 8 for almost 2+ months, i have finally shifted to my old and trusty Windows 7.
God it looks so familiar with 7 that now i want to forget all the memories of windows 8 and it's stupid bugs.
One line verdict : Forget windows 8 if you are using a custom rig with lot of muscles, this thing is made only for ARM devices ie. Surface,Touchscreen Ultra portables and AIO.
PS : This is completely my opinion so take it with a pinch of salt
