    Vista TweakGuide

My first post here in a very long time. The TweakGuides site has just put up the Windows Vista TweakGuide for free download. Get it here. It seems to be a massive 250 page document that has everything from basics to advanced stuff. Worth a read.

    SensorsView 1.2

Unfortunately, it seems to be giving faulty readings. Here is a screenshot of what it shows on my system: 126 Deg C on my CPU??? And look at what Asus Probe is reporting at the same time. 36 C!! Either I did something wrong or there is a huge bug in SensorsView... Since there is nothing for...

    Linux OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 Final

Your take on this article, guys? We use Microsoft Office at our office and I had visions of moving to OO, but after looking at this article I am having second thoughts. Typical reaction by a prospective user, but while I can make the move personally it will probably remain a strict no-no for...

    Fear about F.E.A.R.

I think "switch off soft shadows" should be stuck on the retail box of F.E.A.R. The implementation is terrible to say the least and looks like they tried offsetting the actual shadow a few times with slightly varying angles and hoped it would look good. It didn't, but they went with it any way...

    Why always "Acquiring network address"?

My LAN icon in the tray to which only the DataOne modem's Ethernet cable is connected, always shows the status as "Acquiring network address", as can be seen below: I have noticed that it will take anywhere between 15 to 20 minutes to actually say "Connected" in the status. But during this...

    Something like DUMeter?

There doesn't seem to be any simple solution for this. The nearest I got was CommView, which will record activity based on IP addresses on the LAN. Understanding and using it seems to be quite a learning curve. Hmmm, I guess I have to continue to rely on the ISP's counter for the moment. I must...

    Something like DUMeter?

Yeah, that is what I did. But my LAN traffic is also being recorded, since it is going thru the same NIC. Since the router is directly connected to the network switch, there is no way I can install DUMeter on one single system to monitor traffic. Googling for this problem is not yielding any...

    Something like DUMeter?

I downloaded and installed DUMeter for checking DL/UL data transfer on my computer in the office. However, there is a BIG problem. DUMeter counts all data transfer (including those that are happening on the LAN) and thereby records unwanted information. There are several systems on the LAN and I...

    White screen in Starship Troopers

But that doesn't explain why the same game was running perfectly well on the same set of drivers. Anyway, I will update to the latest WHQL drivers and see if it makes any difference.

    White screen in Starship Troopers

Just downloaded the Starship Troopers Demo from nZone. It installed successfully and the first time, even ran successfully. I was able to play some part of the level. Some time later (maybe a day or so), I started playing it again. The initial movies come out OK, but from the main screen...

Graphic Cards NEW 6600 GT System Crashing!!!

I remember reading somewhere that the power line from the PSU to the GFX card should not be shared with any other peripheral, especially with the HDD. You know what I mean, right? Some cables that comes out of the PSU have two power connectors that can be attached to different peripherals. I...

    Unable to access DataOne portal

I tried that, but no go. Site is not responding. Customer support is not very helpful in this regard. Does anyone know if the server is down or something? Been quite a while now since I logged in.

    Unable to access DataOne portal

Whenever I open the DataOne oprtal at http://10.240.43.216/webLogin.jsp, I get a message that I should enable cookies in IE. Well, duh, cookies are enabled and I was able to login to the site until a few days back. Are any of you DataOne users able to login to the portal? I am not able to check...

The scariest game you played !!

For me, it was the Doom series (especially Doom 3). Reasons: 1. I am a rabid Doomster 2. The sheer darkness of D3 itself is half the scare 3. Amazing sounds, more so after I got the 5.1 surround headset 4. I just didnt want to go further, being scared of what might jump out 5. Probably also...

    3D PC Games

I am not too sure about watching 3D movies with glasses on regular TV, but you can certainly play any game with these glasses. I personally havent seen or played with them, but here is a link that will give you more information on this issue. EDIT: Looked around a little more. EDimensional has...

Have you seen a BSOD lately?

From your other post: Did you try installing any flavor of Linux on this system withe the CL1 and CL2 caches enabled? If so, what was the result? If not, why blame Windows for this?

Have you seen a BSOD lately?

We techheads get more BSODs simply because we like tinkering with the system to extract that last bit of juice from it, either for getting a few more FPS in our favorite games or just for the heck of it. But most regular users who are not much into driver updates, tweaking, overclocking or even...

Have you seen a BSOD lately?

This bit of wisdom from Safin's "Guide to Warez" post set me off: I have been using (and abusing) Windows right from 3.11 (the famous Windows For Workgroups) to Windows XP SP2 and I have seen the dreaded BSODs a few times. These are my observations: I have rarely seen it in WFW or Windows NT...
