Graphic Cards XFX confirms they wont be making GTX 480 and GTX 470

Well well well....

XFX, one of the largest Nvidia AIB confirmed that they wont be making GTX 480 and GTX 470 this time around.

There was no press release from them and that did cause few raised eyebrows, but today almost all big names in media received confirmation from XFX that they are indeed not going to be making any GTX 470 and 480 cards and will be focusing on the ATI high end hardware for now.

They will continue supporting and selling older Nvidia cards and will be open to selling low end and mainstream versions of Fermi.

This is definitely big blow to Nvidia as XFX was very big AIB partner for Nvidia globally unlike some others like BFG and Evga which do not have penetration in European and asian markets.

Hmmm im not saying it is but could it be a case of NV not giving XFX any allocation of Fermi boards as they are no longer exclusively an Nvidia partner. The availability of the cards as we know is very low at the moment and maybe Nvidia decided to cut XFX out? After all XFX does not have to make any boards because currently all boards are reference design based and made by NV. Wouldnt hurt XFX to sell the cards. This PR statement by XFX could be just to spin things in a positive way, after all would they want to admit it if it was infact true?

Note: Im stating again, all this is just speculation on my part

well one more nail in that coffin for green, hope they got something in the bag to recover from this. This is going to make the market a bit more unbalanced and give more reasons for the red to not change the price ... which is not going to be good for us the customers.

Very unlikely.

MSI, ASUS are also making ATI cards.

But XFX is known for their double lifetime warranty in US / EU. Maybe they didnt think it is viable to sell fermi in its current form with low margins and still offer the same warranty that they offer in US.

Who knows, we surely wont know real reason behind this officially.

This along with the news that ATI is already working on second gen DX11 cards put more than a dozen nails in the green coffin.

We have heard and confirmed from multiple independent sources that XFX won’t have Fermi cards at launch.

Nvidia is punishing this highly successful brand by cutting them off from Geforce GTX 480 and 470 launch cards, and this is a direct result of XFX's last year's decision to to start selling ATI. Since Nvidia’s sales department doesn't know any better, this is the action the green company decided to take.

Nvidia refuses to see that this might be a bad thing for the whole company as XFX has a very loyal fan base who will probably start standing up for themselves when they realize they won’t get a decent launch quantity of these cards.

In the meantime, XFX’s answer to Nvidia’s cut-out deal is bringing the fastest ever Radeon HD 5970 X2 cards with super specs, and we will try to get as many details as we can.

Fudzilla - XFX won’t have Fermi at launch

But Fudzilla is saying nvidia is not providing XFX with chips. Ya other manufacturers do ATi as well. But XFX was NVIDIA exclusive all these yrs and started to make ATI ones only recently. So which true :S NVIDIA shunning XFX or the other way around?

^ does it matter? Either way, it's not good for nVidia overall. Forget how ever nVidia's sales and marketing department want to spin it, it's quite clear that nVidia simply doesn't have enough chips to give around. Punishment or not, it's pretty sad decision considering the fact that XFX is one of top-tier brand and has it's own fan following, so not only nVidia has enough chips to sale, now they have one less partner to help them garner much needed sale figures.

What bugs me more than thanks to nVidia's stupid decisions all along, the balance has shifted drastically in ATi's favor... which means ATi can keep firm command of prices and we won't see any dramatic price cuts any sooner. Even though currently the Price-to-Performance ratio is higher for ATi cards, many would like price cuts so they can taste the goodness of mid-high (5850) to high-end (5870) cards, both of which are way above $250 mark.

if you all remember..even eVGA wanted to sell ATi cards last year which was rejected by ATi...

it may happen some day which would eave nV with less/none exclusive partners... not good..ATi will be new nV..end of mean price wars :(

Oh Noes... I hope they don't repeat the naming game. 5870 on 28nm node becomes 6870.. :bleh:

(It's a joke, before anyone links me to the Radeon 6000 thread.)

i meant about pricing game :p

we all love price wars...but only as long as both the teams are in the game..

^ True... as it is Fermi has given enough reasons to ATi, for not cutting down any prices. It's fun when both camps are neck to neck in the race and we get benefited from the Price Wars. Sadly, it's not going to be so for some time now. :(

Apart from Price Wars, occasional fanboi outbursts also provide good entertainment. :p

Woh!!! Unbelievable. 3 days ago it was all XFX Fermi inauguration on thier website, now everything's disappeared . Too bad , too bad for nV.

XFX entered ATI's zone due to the brand image getting effected thanks to overly hot 8600GT. Looks like they are going to assess the situation carefully this time as GTX4xx looks to be much bigger nuclear reactors. anyways, it's good only for ATI. I do hope EVGA and BFG too start selling ATI cards.
