I'm using PC-BSD.. just make sure that you install it on a Primary Partition.. It won't install on a logical partition, although it can access them.. Secondly, PC-BSD comes with KDE 4x version.. if you want to get GNOME on it, then I suggest you wait for the PC-BSD 9.0 version..

HP has implemented their CoolSense Tech across loads of laptop.. Going by the AMD Fusion based DM1Z that Anandtech reviewed, I think that heating shouldn't be much of a problem in that laptop..
