Eurofighter typhoon vs Dassault Rafale

1st priority is autonomy. We BUY stuff from others. We don't make them ourselves. This means we are dependent on the third country for replacement parts and maintenance works. During our previous wars, we had to heed to american "requests" to finish ours wars half way through because if we didn't, they(USA) would have stopped support. This deal is a step towards indigenation of our assets and its support equipment.

2nd priority is technology. Rafale "might" not match up to the typhoon "technologically" but accepting typhoon would have defeated the purpose of the first priority.

Insisting on the first requirement will serve india in the long run towards self-dependency and fulfillment of its needs indigenously.

Oh yeah, I expect corruption charges on this deal too.

I like the damn the world attitude that france and israel have! We could honestly do with some of that attitude! The french gign commandos blew up a greenpeace ship because they were protesting against the nuclear tests being conducted by france somewhere near new zealand or some place.

@broadway - your explanation of the two point theory holds true. We would rather not sway and dance to the whims and fancies of certain dominant nations and deal with situations which benefit our own interests.

Since we are getting the far more capable Su-PAK T50 there was no point in getting the F35. The question is timing. By the time we get the full delivery of the Rafales, China would be bringing their 5th Gen fighter & there starts the trouble.

Rafale is from a single country, the fact that no other country has experience with them is itself a very positive factor. Even China would have to double-guess what to do when they confront the Rafales. In one of the exercises with the US, the USAF came to a reasonable understanding of the aerodynamic capabilities of Su30mki only when they operated their F22 and F16 against them.

Only problem would be if the French quietly sell the Rafales to Pakistan (China-funded deal) or China itself. They did us in when they agreed to sell the Scorpene subs to Paki navy!

Rafale also makes sense when you recall that the Navy is also looking for fighters. Rafale has a naval version - EF doesn't!

Full tech transfer esp., the AESA radar would be useful even for our own LCA.

Sweden sold us flash x-ray devices essential for fine tuning "bombs", this was of course never acknowledged by either country. Some non-proliferation guys picked it up & flashed the news.

We really would never know what else the French offered in terms of tech transfer!
