Are HRM watches really worth the price?

I was a regular jogger/runner for a year before I slacked off and I am looking to get back to that activity. After starting off a few weeks back again, I noticed I ran farther than when I started the first time around a year ago :). However, rate of fat loss seems to have lowered. I was planning on getting an HRM to spruce up the intensity and for the novelty factor as well. Wanted something basic and came across this listing on Playgroundonline.

Shall I go for it? Is the brand reliable? And how long can the batteries on these things last assuming a weekly use of 6-7 hours?

Opinions/advice?

Anyone?

Thanks for the info! Didn't know that.

I was hoping to get more insights into the suitability/viability of getting an HRM watch. Does anybody here own one? Or has owned one?
The Kalenji one is pretty cheap with 2 years warranty to boot. Rest all reputed names are upwards of 4K on Flipkart. I am in two minds about the useful of such a watch towards a better workout/cardio.

you use deca ?
have done a cutting cycle last year with good results. planning to do one again in end feb to get shredded for the summers. im having a really hard time finding some sources for the other good stuff .
I know what it is, I don't use it.[DOUBLEPOST=1389669135][/DOUBLEPOST]Stuff I bought on sunday. This is a huge space saver and will really help during workouts, heck even my mom thinks this is a wise buy.

Could you suggest weights that are cheaper and rubber coated like the ones you got? Perhaps useful for both dumbbells and the Olympic size rods?
Also looking for an incline and decline bench. Do give your suggestions.

In NCR price ranges from Rs. 70 kg to rs. 200 per kg or even more for hammer strength weights. Mine are olympic size plates and don't fit in dumbbell rods. All of these are made in china and are more or less of same quality. The ones with bush are slightly costly like the ones i got. If you want plates that you can use for dumbbells also then those are available too. But bear in mind the standard plates have a lot of ****in torque and many people hate that including me.

Olympic Weights Advantages: IMO overshadow the standard weights advantages, that is why i sold my old plates on olx.

  • Strength - Standard bars will start bending somewhere over 200 lbs, whereas even cheap Olympic bars can take more than that, and high quality Olympic bars are made to hold up to just about anything.
  • Accuracy - Certain models of olympic weights are quality controlled for precise weight. A small inaccuracy isn't likely to matter much with a single plate, but with several plates loaded on one side of a bar, those differences can add up. And it's nice to be able to have an accurate log from one day to the next of how much you're really lifting.
  • Stability. Olympic bars are thicker and heavier on the ends and are much more difficult to tip over due to unbalanced weight when loading heavy plates.
  • No torque - Olympic bars have revolving ends, or sleeves, so that there is no added torque while performing certain exercises such as snatches or cleans where the bar needs to rotate quickly. It even helps for curls. >>>> I used to feel crazy torque while overhead pressing.
  • Rack compatibility. Power racks and olympic width bench racks are made to take 7ft bars. Standard bars in most prepackaged weight sets are only 5 ft or 6 ft long.
  • Thickness - The middle portion of the bar, or shaft, is a slightly larger diameter on Olympic bars. A standard bar is typically 1", while Olympic bars can range from 25mm (1") to 32mm (1 1/4"). Some women like 25mm bars. Most men prefer 28mm or larger, depending on the exercise performed.
  • Bumper Plates - Bumper plates are generally only available in olympic. They are plates with a metal hub and several inches of rubber that can handle being dropped to the floor unlike iron plates, and they are all supposed to be the same 450mm (17.72") diameter, no matter the weight, so they can share the shockload. They are popular for CrossFit and other people doing deadlifts, snatches and cleans.
  • Other Options - Grip plates have built-in handles that make the plates much easier to carry safely. Rubber or urethane encased plates combat paint chipping, noise and rust. Olympic plates have the best variety of these options!!
Standard Weights Advantages: The only advantage i see is that these plates can be used with dumbbell rods as well.

  • Price - Standard bars are more cheaply made and are lighter to ship. The weight plates themselves cost about the same for basic cast iron models.
  • Light Weight - Lighter bars mean a lighter starting weight for people new to lifting weights.
  • Dumbbell Handles - Most Standard dumbbell handles (14") are shorter than Olympic (18"), and many people prefer shorter ones for dumbbell exercises.
  • Spin-Lock Collars - Also called star lock collars. Some Standard bars come with threaded sleeves to accommodate spin-lock collars to secure the plates, rather than the traditional collars that slide on and lock in place by compression. Spin lock collars may not even be an advantage, as they take a moment to spin on and off a long bar, but some people like them, so it's worth mentioning. Note that whether spin-lock or not, all Standard bars use the same Standard plates.
Olympic weights are by far the most commonly used by gyms, pro athletes, powerlifters, bodybuilders, high schools, colleges and universities, as well as a large number of casual home users. It's the way to go if you're unsure.

An update to this thread... My current weight is 82.5Kg. :). Feels good when I check my weight everyday morning.

I do have a general idea of diet that restricts my daily intake of around 2000 calories or under it. A strict non veggie who munches meat 3 or 4 times a day, now 3 days per week veggie. :).
The other 4 days, only 1 time i will have meat. Dinners are always something light. Biscuits, fruits, cheese, pista or cashew. combination of sorts. Try to keep it around 200 to 300 calories.
2 hour gap between meals. around 4 to 5 litres of water everyday.

Friday dinner... guilty pleasure.. Will have whatever I want. From 118Kg+ to 82.5KG as of today..feels good. :).

No exercise for around 3 months now. Cold..chilly temp...Cant go for run. But do walk around 4 to 5 kms a day. Need to get back to running.. 5K, here I come. :D :D

Woah in how many months did you lose the weight?

So, I started with starting strength this week. At this time I'm just working on getting the form right. My gym has about a max of 260kgs how long do you reckon it will take to work up to that limit? I find bar+5kgs is stressing me plenty (bar + 10 for squats).

260kg is a lot of weight. As the amount of weight you can take increases, the speed at which it increases decreases. So the graph goes up fast at the beginning and then starts tapering. You have nothing to worry about there.

260 kgs in plates is something only the elite will ever touch. most will never even reach half that in their life. took me nearly 3 years to squat 120 kgs .
