Try Avast free edition. Which contains only the antivirus not the free/trial internet security stuff.
Using it on 5 machines having internet for last couple of years. 5 years on my personal PC. No issues. Very light on system resources.

There is nothing wrong with Microsoft security essentials. It works fine and have been using it on my pc without any problem. The only downside is that it is compatibleonly with Vista and win7. If you are looking for a commercial security suite or using Xp get KIS 2012 or Mcafee virus scan plus.

Even I would recommend avast home edition which is free. also has sand-boxing feature.
using it for the last 6 years with Internet. light on resources, unobtrusive but does work extremely well. Never been infected.

i used to think the same before a trojan infected my pc ,security essential was able to detect the file affected and deleted it but could not stop the service which spawns the file and i could not boot in to windows ,i had to download and boot windows defender through usb drive,it detected the source and i was able to boot .

Avast just got updated y'day and now it even supprts Hindi, Bengali and Malay...
Nice advance to woo Indian customers. Recently I have seen people not minding to pay below 1000 for good antivirus even if it is for personal use... Such things definitely help. @alive hunter : Why dont you your self start trying out the 2-3 top mentioned AVs in this thread. Like Avast, MS security essentials or defender. I have defender on my machine but the only time I notice it is when I do a windows update... There is always an update for it available.

Microsoft Security Essentials is good. I use it presently (now that i have a genuine copy of windows).

Before that it was Avira Antivir + Comodo Firewall

Previous to that, it was Kaspersky.

All products are good enough, if you know how to handle Internet downloads and friend's Pendrives cautiously.
