'Star Wars' fans have launched their own attack on the web, boosting traffic an average of 168 percent at three major Web sites focused on the soon-to-be released sixth movie in the popular sci-fi movie saga, a research firm said Wednesday.

"Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" is scheduled to make its debut shortly after 12 a.m. Thursday, but fans have been hitting the sites heavily since Monday, looking for the latest news, according to ComScore Networks, Inc.

The largest of the sites, StarWars.com, drew 544,000 visitors on Monday, up 181 percent, when compared to the average of the previous four Mondays, ComScore said. TheForce.net, a fan site devoted to all things 'Star Wars,' drew 105,000 visitors on Monday, up 146 percent; and LucasArts.com, director George Lucas's official site, attracted 91,000 visitors, an increase of 153 percent.

The average boost for all three sites was 168 percent, ComScore said.

In addition, ComScore found that nearly a million consumers conducted online searches for 'Star Wars' terms during the week ending May 8.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that multiplexes in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, Seattle and San Francisco were adding screenings as midnight showings were selling out quickly.
