Windows Remote desktop cant reconnect after disconnection .

I have been using the inbuilt windows remote desktop software to connect from my main Win 8.1 pro PC to my win xp pro download rig .

I have been using remote desktop to conncet to this win xp pc for 5 years without any issues .

Since yesterday i cant reconnect after the connection disconnects, i have to reboot the xp machine to make it connect again but it can connect only once , if it disconnects i have to again reboot . There has been no hardware or software changes to both machines before this issue started .

How to fix this ?
 
I've used windows remote desktop in the past but switched to tightvnc viewer http://www.tightvnc.com/

havent faced any connection issues since then.

Its faster and smoother than windows remote desktop with host of adjustments. I think you should give it a try once.
 
No, the problem is back again , but its a wierd issue, i can close the remote desktop window & reconnect again but if the router reboots i cant reconnect , i can still access the files on the xp pc through lan but cant connect through remote desktop .
