@Spacescreamer - Yup games that don't have mandatory installs will work fine but the issue will be installing patches and most games have them and it will gradually eat up the space.
Also the user with a 12 GB PS3 must check the HDD requirement mentioned at the back of the box. Some games have optional install data example Virtua Fighter 5 so they too will work fine. Games like Enslaved Odyssey to the west install in the background as you play but I am sure if the game detects that there's insufficient space it won't install it's data.
