Motherboard Gigabyte 880GM-USB3L (AM3+) 4200
RAM G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz CL9 1x4GB 1650
GPU Ondie HD4250
HDD Seagate 7200.12 1TB 2700
Cabinet NZXT Gamma 2100

PSU Seasonic S12II 430w 3000
Keyboard Logitech K&M Combo 700
Mouse
Speakers Altec Lansing VS2621 1500
DVD Writer Samsung 950
Total 29000

The ondie IGP would suffice for your parent's requirements... Plus it would be better if you would go with a quadcore as future application would benefit from more cores...

Intel Alternative

CPU - Intel Core i5 2400 ~ 9300
Motherboard - Intel DH67BL ~ 5200

thanks hades.

Any advantage of llano for this config?

I am thinking in terms of 32nm advantage and overall power savings.

I have no love for LIano... Coz LIano processors and motherboards are ridiculously priced in India... A decent Liano Combo costs 12600... If you would buy

AMD Phenom II x4 840 ~ 4800

Gigabyte 880GM-USB3L ~ 4200

Sapphire HD5670 512MB ~ 4000

Total = 13000

The Phenom Combo that i've mentioned would outperform Any LIano COmbo in everytask... Whether its gaming , encoding , rendering etc... And the HD5670 would pawn A8-3850 IGP easily whether its gaming or video post processing... Actually LIano processors dont consume lesser power than sandybrdge processors... But they do consume somewhat lesser power than Phenom II processors as AMD has produced these LIano APUs using 32nm node... And as 880GM-USB3L is an AM3+ motherboard you would also be having an option to upgrade to bulldozer processor in the future...

Flipkart.com: Lenovo Essential G Series G570 (59-301878): Computer

If laptop i would suggest this Lenovo. Decent build. You can add another 4GB stick for ~1.5k taking the laptop price to ~22.8k.

The processor is latest gen. Sandy Bridge pentium B940 which is good enough for HD movies etc...

Also it has a webcam, mic and HDMI port. So all the most important connectivity is also covered.

Only disadvantage is the 1366*768 screen resolution but this is the norm for almost all 15.6" sub-50k laptops.

Laptop is already their.

Its a HP laptop.dad uses that .

But mom wants proper desktop.

I will see If I can convince them.

Thanks guys.

If you would buy a laptop then you would loose future upgradability... Plus i dont think its worth buying a laptop if someone is not buying it for portability... I have seen many ppl who buy laptops to use them at home only... Why use a laptop like a desktop? One can build a much powerful rig by spending the same amount of money...

He doesnt want to upgrade for 3-4 years.

Many dont know how to assemble a rig and might be taken for a ride.

+ves of laptops

Doesnt have the hassle of running to the shop to get individual parts replaced.

Works out of box.

Consumes lesser power.

Browsing while lazing around on a couch or bed :D

Only -ves are limited warranty(which can be extended to 3 years for ~4k for most brands) and limited upgradability.

But even then the RAM can be upgraded to 8GB and you can get an external HDD with USB 3.0 for cheaper. This way even the HDD lasts longer since its not constantly on.

The dual core pentium 2.0 GHz of arrandale and sandy bridge are pretty powerful and is plenty for one who needs only movies and other basic tasks. So unless one wants to game or doesnt need raw power the laptops are a better bet these days.

The desktop growth has stagnated and laptops are surging these days because they have hit the magical 20k price point.

Even a 21k laptop like the Lenovo G570 has a webcam, microphone and more importantly a HDMI port which the sub 3k motherboards lacks.

The mobile processor has become very powerful that even the cheapest one can satisfy the needs of 70%+ of PC users.

You can get a 14" Toshibha with T4500 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM and 320GB HDD for 15.8k! Got my first dell inspiron E6400 for 48k and it had 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD and a C2D 1.73GHz before 4 years and now a laptop that costs less that 1/3rd of the price is more powerful than it. How times have changed!

P.S: Sorry for divulging from the topic.

Even I got my first laptop, Sony vaio fz140 with windows vista home premium and latest Intel core 2duo t7100 with 2gb ram (that time norm was 1gb when vista came out)and 200 gb hdd ( biggest hard disk available that time) and it was just launched vaio for 1400 that time..

4yrs ago.

Over last 4yrs, I upgraded ram to 3gb and hdd to 500gb Hitachi 7200 rpm.

Its still pretty functional.

I will see if mom and sis agrees.

Assembling is not an issue.

I do it quite easily.

I have opened and closed HP dv 5laptop twice and its still working fully.

It had heating issue for which I did reapplying of as5 to processor with cleaning of exhaust.
