Is your 5G phone really a 5G?

This good video from beebom classifies some mobiles depending upon how many indian 5G bands they support.

Apparently, many xiaomi, oppo, onePlus flagships don't support most of the Indian 5G bands.

Many moto mid range phones support all of the 8 bands.

My phone is neither 5G ready nor it's fauji ready.

See attached for who got what where. Pulled from the comments below this article

The high band is 26 GHz (n258) .

Mid band is 1,800 (n3), 2,100 (n1) & 3,300 (n77, n78) MHz and

Low band is 700 (n28), 800 (n5) & 900 (n8) MHz

The S20FE supports 9 bands : 1 (2,100), 3 (1,800), 5 (800), 7 (2,600) , 8 (900), 28 (700), 40 (2,300), 41 (2,500), 78 (3,300)

This is ridiculous , i mean we have to visit a shop and ask for supported bands first ? a simple 5g is just a smart marketing gimmick.

That is what was acquired by them in the auction so it is indicative at best but helpful to confirm if you are at least covered in terms of the 5g phone you own.
I suppose we will still need to wait for the official launch to see what all bands actually become available.
Source of the individual tables ?
Edit : It seems that the spectrum allocation is yet to be completed

Bands 1,3,5,8,28 and 40 are most useful for us. Higher frequency mm wave are hardly of any use.
Now, all the spectrum is allotted as unified spectrum. So telecom companies are free to offer 5G services on existing bands.

Once 5G becomes popular they will reframe existing 800/900/1800/2100/2300 MHz spectrum to offer 5G services.
Add 700/2600 bands that will launch only with 5G.

mm wave spectrum will be mostly for captive usage.

How about iphones? Are they compatible with all the bands?
Apple has a pretty handy reference. TL;DR: SE 2022/12/13 series support all 5g bands apart from the mmWave ones.

For that, you need to know what bands your phone supports

Won't be too far off. I'm disappointed that Airtel only has 3,300 Mhz for Karnataka. 4G at 2,300 does not penetrate well and this 5G will penetrate even less unless they install a stronger transmitter. Jio & Vodafone have lower frequencies for the state.

No idea what the source is maybe grabs from the newspaper or from that website

You don't have to visit any shop. Just figure out what 5G bands your phone supports. Then pick the telco that supports it.

It'd be great if there was some app that showed this info. It's very useful.

I think one should avoid buying 5g phone as of now untill 5g becomes a bit mature just like windows 11. Starting stage is experimental stage. During 2016-17 when airtel started rolling out its 4g service here in my area, even after doing 4g recharge on a 4g sim, it automatically switches to 3g and even to 2g sometimes. So this can happen with 5g also.

Which phone do you have ?
4 year old Poco F1. It's not 5G.

Not just that but there will be more 5G based features that will arrive after some time and even current ultra flagship won't be supporting them.

First, Second gen 4G phones didn't support VoLTE forget VoWiFi. I think those are very important factors of the 4G. VoLTE allowed the user use the internet while on the call. It's something we take it for granted today. That alone made 7k budget VoLTE supporting phones more practical than my then only 1 year old 33k flagship.

I have not got a 5g phone yet as I am waiting for the roll out to happen first.
you were selling mi 11 lite 5g i guess that was a proper global 5g phone minus mm wave support
26ghz band would be for enterprises and corporates .Paid high speed internet at public spaces like airport railways tourist spot etc .Expect waves of 5g dongles etc , it could usurp wifi if priced rightly and telcos are kind of prepared for long term game for generating profit.they should overall target tier 2 cities etc with 26ghz band to bring hassle free high speed internet.

You are mistaking me for someone else.. please check again. I currently use a LG G8x as primary and a Pixel 3a as secondary.
I have held off on all this 5g nonsense as I want see how the rollout goes. It is not even a dedicated 5g infrastructure but piggy backing on the current one so not holding out much hope on if it will make much of a difference.
