Car & Bike How do cab services work?

Anyone here who uses cabs daily and could tell me some basic things I need to know.
Have never used one as I usually take metro or my friend's car.
But might have to use it daily from a few days.
How do I and my friend go to some place using same cab? Would the cab be picking up other passengers as well or only me and the people I bring with me?
And which one is good for Delhi?

Normally the cab would take only you and your friend to the destination.
Unless you are using ridesharing option. In Uber there is an option for sharing the cab. So if someone is on the same route and has booked the cab, the driver may pick him up.

Supposing me and my friend are the only passengers, how would we be charged?
Per person or only thru distance travelled,no matter how many people I bring with me?

Depens on the company. Uber charges both by distance and by time.
Suppose you travelled 20 KM and the total trip took 60mins.
Rate per KM = Rs.9 and Rate per min = Re. 1

Total bill for your journey = Rs. (21 x 9) + (60 x 1) = Rs.249

Ola/Meru charge differently. Check the prices on their app/website before booking.

Thing with these cab services online is they have your number for life. So they will be sending you greetings by SMS for the rest of yours :D

i guess am fortunate atleast in this regard. never received any unwanted SMSes from cab-companies, nor any friend-requests from beautiful dubious 'girls' over SMS/whatsapp. :D

OLA cabs in Bangalore has three classes - mini, sedan and prime.
I had used their app to book a ride.

# It uses the phone's location/google maps to choose the pickup point.
# You can select 'ride now' or 'ride later' to schedule for later time/date.
# The charges in Bangalore - first 6 kms = Rs 100, thereafter Rs 10/km.
# They have waiting charges of Rs 2/km. (also applicable for traffic congestion)
# Payment can be via cash or pre-paid using ola-wallet service.

# You can select 'ride now' or 'ride later' to schedule for later time/date.
How long do you have to wait on average for the cab to arrive ?

ola don't do waiting as in you can't book the cab for several hours, they prefer drops and if you need one later book again.

In kolkata, on an average it takes 10mins for the cab to arrive. I had to wait for 18mins also for one. Depends on the availablity in your immediate vicinity.
You will be shown the ETA when you are specifying your position. No need to even book. You will be shown the position of the cabs and ETA for the closest option.

Because they can't block it just in Delhi, they want to block it all over the country ?

Govt mulls blocking of apps of Uber,Ola, others across country

The government is mulling blocking mobile taxi hailing apps of Uber, Ola and TaxiForSure all over the country, with the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) seeking views from the Transport Ministry for the same.

The Delhi government had requested DEITY to block such apps, but the Department found it technically impossible to do so for one particular state, and therefore, it sought "concurrence" of the transport ministry for all-India execution, a senior IT ministry official told PTI.

The official added that it is technically not possible to block an application only in Delhi and the execution can only happen at the national level.

"Therefore, we have sought views of the Transport Ministry and are waiting for their reply," the official said.

When contacted, a senior official in the Road Ministry said: "We are looking into it on our own. More details will be worked out next week."

The Delhi government last month had requested the Centre to block web-based apps of taxi operators Uber, Ola Cabs and TaxiForSure alleging that these companies were not complying with a ban order imposed by it.

All app-based cab services were banned in the National Capital after a driver of Uber, the US-based online taxi- hailing company, was accused of raping a female passenger.

The Delhi transport commissioner had also said that a number of complaints were being received by the transport department saying operations of such taxi services in an unauthorised manner were putting the safety and security of commuters at risk.
