Google sunsets Domains business and shovels it off to Squarespace

The “definitive agreement” between Google and Squarespace includes assurances that customers will get the same renewal prices available to them for the next 12 months. Plus, Squarespace agrees to provide “incentives” for customers to build their website with the company’s platform.

For some users, especially those who only hold their domain at Google for convenience’s sake (and point it to their hosted website elsewhere), Squarespace may not be adding any value. And as it stands: Squarespace’s domain purchasing process, by design, assumes you’re also building a website from scratch on the company’s platform.

Anthey addition to Killed by Google. Google domains was quite convenient as there was no bloat but now squarespace will shove ads and their own platform to the users. Which is really sad
Used Google domains for a couple of years on account of some novelty domains. However, for .com have mostly stuck to Cloudflare as they are the closest to the actual cost of owning a domain, though NameCheap is a close second. Google domains was always overpriced for any mainstream TLD.

I am not too concerned about this service heading to the afterlife, the last thing people should have with Google is their domain.
Google can kick you out of their services at their sole discretion without any recourse, having an email based on your own domain is a lifesaver in those cases.

People using google workspace on their domain, shaking in fear.

Google workspace has a big market share .. including Google for education. So unlikely it will get similar boot.

Google domains was indeed kind of sidegig. And as Google received a big jolt by MS backed Chatgpt so there ought to be some shake ups at their end .

This adds one more inconvenience dealing with google products ?
People went to google products for their convenience, goog is everyday trying to add complexity step by step.
Looks like they are into major h/w based business (self driving, robots of all kind, etc.) in future than s/w products.
