PC Peripherals Does USB 3.0 depend on cabinet or motherboard?

Hi all,

With the new USB 3.0 standard now gaining buzz, and me planning to assemble a PC soon I was wondering... Is USB 3.0 standard mean that the motherboard needs to support or does it need support from the cabinet as well - specifically the front USB drives?

First of all the SouthBridge of the motherboard has to support USB 3.0 standard(Older mobos used an addon USB 3.0 controller.)In case of a mobo with te USB 3.0 support u will see blue USB 3.0 ports on the back of the mobo. Not all cabinets support USB 3.0 on THE FRONT PANEL coz the wiring is a bit different for USB 2 and 3.But almost all good cases nowadays have front panel USB 3.0 ports too.e.g the CM 690

^^ Motherboard must have USB3 port if you want to use it... Some high end motherboards come with USB3 headers... whereas budget boards do not provide you this feature but they do however carry USB3 back I/O ports... See if you want to buy a cabinet with front USB3 port then the cheapest cabinet thats available with front USB3 port is NZXT Source Elite 210... The disadvantage it has that you need to have a motherboard which must have USB3 header to use its front USB3 ports which only comes in high end boards (like Asus P8P67 Pro) and some high end cabinets comes with a type of front USB3 port that you just only need to connect the USB3 port using USB3 cable to the back I/O USB3 port...

Thanks Hades and Marcus Fenix for your inputs...

So based on what you're saying, some of the sub-5K cabinets like the NZXT gamma, vulcan etc. probably dont support USB 3.0 in the front?

This also makes me conclude that if I am assembling a PC now, I probably WILL have USB 3.0 in the back but not in the front (considering I plan on buying complete CPU for about 40K)?? What say?
