Can a 5GHz router repeat a 2.4GHz network?

Can I set up a 5GHz WiFi network that serves as a repeater for a different 2.4GHz network (fiber internet)? Do all/only some 5GHz routers allow this, and what should I be looking at? I don't necessarily want to get faster internet speeds out of it, my goal is to get quicker file transfers over the local network using FTP.

You can't repeat 2.4Ghz radio signal using 5Ghz radio. The communication is not possible since they are different frequencies.
You can use the 2.4Ghz radio to repeat the other 2.4Ghz signal and then the 5Ghz radio would also provide you the connectivity to that network.

Local transfers will be limited to the speed of 2.4Ghz bandwidth only. Also at half the speed on the repeating router.

Your question doesn't really explain what you have currently and what you're trying to do. Try to ask the question in the following manner:
  1. Explain your current setup
  2. Explain what you're trying to and what roadblocks you are facing
  3. Explain what solution you're thinking of then ask for suggestions
Giving partial information will get you inaccurate and unhelpful answers.

If you physically connect the 5ghz router to the fiber internet router through a lan cable, you will get maximum FTP/HTTP speeds.

If your **goal is to get quicker file transfers over the local network using FTP** i would recommend staying away from all repeaters. Unless you have dual radios, a reapeter will effectively half your bandwidth on each hop. Repeaters are primarily for convinence (of not having to do wiring) and not performance. Furthermore wifi can be very unpredictable and an electrically noisy environment will significantly lower performance. With speed in mind Optic/fibre > LAN/wire > Wifi in that order. Also keep in mind that a decade old CAT5E will do gigabit speed while in the same time you would have probably changed wifi router 3 times from Wifi4 to Wifi6. Prefer using CAT6 for any new installation.

Tp link repeaters have an option.
You can either use the 2.4 to talk to main router and 5 ghz to repeat the signal.
Or 5ghz to talk to main router and 2.4ghz to repeat the signal.
(Have used similar setups in the past, feel free to DM for further queries)

As long as the router/repeater youre using to repeat has both 2.4G and 5G support, you can use the 5G network to repeat the 2.4G network.
