Aerospace/Marine Engg.

Hello everyone!

I have my 12th board(CBSE) in March next year. I had planning to get into National Defence Academy after completing my intermediate, but didn't score a good mark to crack it. I have another chance for it in May, but will like to keep other options open as well.

So, basically if I am not able to get NDA, am all set to get into technical line. I have decided to go for a BTech degree in either Aerospace or Marine. Can anyone of you guys shade some light into how good these two branch are? How is the placement and future scope in it? Also, am from Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Most of the good colleges by my research seems to be located in South states. Can you guys recommend a few good college in South as well as North India? Private/Govt. both are fine.

I am just an average student. Have a good hand on Physics & Maths. Scores around 85%, is it enough? Not enough to crack a JEE though :D. Anyways, I have sort listed few colleges:
>Indian Maritime University
>Anna University
>AMET University
>Manipal University
>SRM University
>Amity University

One last question, I came across B.Sc. in Nautical Science. But quite skeptical about it as I heard, there is very less scope of a job after B.Sc. People need to get into M.Sc. for a good job. Is that true? Coming from a mid class family, I would definitely look for a job right after a bachelor degree. Kindly help me out on this. Thank you. :)

Regards,
Manjeet.

MIT Pune offers Nautical Engg. Courses .
It has separate campus called MANET.
Just check it out.

For Aerospace you should give ISRO exam.

Thanks for the details. Umm, IIST which is under ISRO needs a good rank in JEE Mains.

Marine engineering will pay well, but job locations will be tough. You might be away from home 4-5 months at a time
Yeah well, coming from a family with 2 of my cousins working in defense, I know how difficult it will be. Any pointers on good institution mate?

There is a institute in Navi mumbai, though i dont know its name. A friends elder brother is marine engineer I will ask him for pointers, however answers might be late since he is on ship at this time

There is a Marine Engineering college in Kolkata (not the Neotia/ITME one. The one in Taratala).
As far as I have heard, it is a government institute. Look it up and see if the placements are good.

Andhra University, Vizag, has a Marine Engg course since many years.

Get coaching for NDA. Life is quite different. If you do get selected, suggest that you ask for Navy?Air Force>Army. Army is the most trying of the 3 services. If you don't like the Navy, you can always switch over to Merchant Navy (navigation, engineer etc.).

You need to get good ranks in JEE for getting into a govt. marine engg. college. One of my friend passed out from MERI Kolkata. He had ranked in extended merit list of IIT-JEE. Most private marine engg. colleges won't give you good placements. Even C.V. Raman Bhubaneswar has Marine engg. but placements are not good.

Also be ready for extreme form of ragging in such colleges. 4 years of hell before getting a good job where salary starts from about 20-30LPA. My friend in currently in Europe Finland/Amsterdam,etc waiting for ship to leave.
