A teardown of the new Mac mini shared by YouTube channel Brandon Geekabit reveals that the 256GB model is equipped with only a single 256GB storage chip, while the same configuration with the M1 chip has two 128GB chips. This difference explains why the new model has a slower SSD, as multiple NAND chips allow for faster speeds.

We have confirmed with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test benchmarking app that SSD read and write speeds for the new 256GB Mac mini are each around 1,500 MB/s, which is anywhere from 30% to 50% slower than read and write speeds for the equivalent previous-generation model, although benchmark results and real-world performance can vary.

so those with M1 still might want to hold on to it. still waiting for more test benchmark results to see how much actual difference it makes in overall performance.

They did the same shit with M2 Pro models 512 GB. Sigh. So much Pro.

M2 is cheaper with more performance so the trade off is acceptable.
The read speed is almost 90% less than M1 base model and write speed is about 60%.
Both the new and earlier models have quite something to offer.

I hope that Apple has done its homework and everything is within acceptable range. Apple always market its products heavily for content creators so at least video editing performance should be fine. Still such slow ssd performance is a bummer for sure.

They did this across all base models of Macbook Air,Mini & PRO series as well. It doesnt matter if the base model comes with 512GB, it still far slower than their 2 year old M1 PROs. The base models has always been crap with 8/256 spec, now they made it even worse.

M2 Mini base is 100 USD cheaper, but customer has to pay 200 USD (20000 INR) more to get the same performance as their 2 year old M1 mini.

Let see what the fanbois will come up with this time to defend this trash company.

Covers everything about M1 vs M2 vs M2pro mini .very informative video.

Between M1 and M2 other than prores files there is hardly any difference in performance.
Infact in few applications (Photoshop) M1 beats M2 maybe due to better SSD speed or maybe in software being more optimised.
But overall performance between M1 and M2 is very marginal.

M2 is might be for someone who does not already have M1 .

M2pro is definitely a decent jump which does come at hefty price too.
