40" LED TV ~ 40k-50k Edit: Bought LG 42LN5710

You are allowed to carry stuff that weighs 50kg - 70kg or so depending on the class you travel in. So it shouldn't be an issue I guess. Just cover the box with some other cover and just slip it under the seat.
yaa.. i know of the weight limits... but heard there are some rules like.. TVs and computers are not eligible for that free luggage limit and need to be booked separately... i guess asking the luggage booking guy at station in advance is the safest bet .

@quartzap: this is India. You don't ask; you "manage".
Best bet would be if you have a companion, travel by 1stAC - get the coupe to yourselves; even if you don't have a companion, 1stAC has the max. room. Else, 2nd AC, where you'll have to get an inside berth & hope that the fellow passengers do not board with lots of luggage.

Anyway, suggest that you do not attempt this during summer holidays, all trains would be teeming with people, all looking for space. After June 20 would be better. SChools normally start by mid-June.

Just a headsup!

I had been to a Vijay Sales outlet with a friend to pick up a 40” LCD/LED TV under 55k. Priority was Samsung because he wanted media playback capability without using a dedicated media player. Zeroed down to the LED TV 40F5100, the Samsung retail pricing was 54,900, the dealer gave him a good discount because he has a frequent customer and the final price was 52,250.

When we were plugging the hard drive to several displays to check the playback, the sales guy insisted that the newly launched Sony W series has improved the playback, detects NTFS drives and plays .mkv files without issues. The Sony units were priced a lot higher, the dealer wasn’t willing to give a paisa discount on these (because of Sony’s pan-India pricing policy), they had a nice brushed metallic frame (I could feel a mild earth leakage like you would feel with those laptops with the metal finishes!), one unit had a bluish fillet on the edges (looked killer!) and although we did not bother with Sony as such, we tried a few files on our hard drive being curious. It did not play some files which the Samsung units were able to. We tested only one model however, which is KDL-42W650. The playback interface was laggy compared to Samsung and browsing through the files were slow. Despite plugging the hard drive, we did not notice the pop-up screen a la Samsung units. The user is required to browse through the inputs first, select the USB hard drive and browse through the contents. So yeah, Sony is yet to catch up on this department.

I believe this was an IPS display (42”?).

Lot of ppl are complaining on the new sony 2013 series for the picture quality.

@Gannu so which tv did your friend pick up.

I too read on hifivision that Samsung's F6400 series has better picture quality than the Sony 42W800. I too am looking for a 40-42" LED. Will soon be going for a demo with a couple of bluray movies. Slightly inclined towards the Samsung 40F6400. One advantage the Sony 42W800A has over the Samsung 40F6400 is that the 42800A offers passive 3D. Although 3D is not the features i'm looking for, it would be a bonus.

Grey market prices in Chennai:
Samsung 40F6400 - 52k
Sony 42HX750 - 59k
Sony 42W800A - 62k

I'm also considering the 40F7500. However, I'm yet to confirm the grey market price.

Cheers,
Shray

Finally just ordered the LG 42LN5710 for 55.5k from ezone. Preferred it over Sammy for the built in wifi and the extra 2 inch screen estate.

Forgot my pen drive but it played FHD videos from the shop's pen drive with ease and the PQ was great. I can always convert files for niche formats or connect the laptop via wi-di :D

'Grats :)
Do post some impressions when you get it.

A friend of mine asked me bout the comparison between LG47LM6410 3D Vs Sony HX750
Assuming the only diff between the mentioned models and the ones you would have scouted would be the real estate, any idea as to which out of these two is more worthy of a purchase..?

The LG seems to be a good choice. I had viewed the same one in the showroom and the PG was good.

I think the panel might be different since its an LM series and 3D too. But one cant say really unless one has seen both the panels in person.
I check the new sammy 40" F5100 and the Sony 42650A before settling with the LG for the features it offers for the price point and the decent PQ.

The interface for browsing the HDD files is excellent. Similar to a desktop navigation.
Connected my 1TB WD Passport. File browsing was smooth. Played mkv files with ease. I tried playing 1080p mkv files with bit rate of 6Mbps. No problems at all.

PQ seems very good. Satisfied with the buy so far. Will order Airtel HD+ today. Will post more views once I get the HD set top box.

Watching cricket in Star Cricket HD was awesome. :) Even the PQ in Star Movies HD/ Movies Now HD seems decent. Anyone knows what is the bitrate for these Movies and sports HD channels?
