Am looking for a netbook for around 15k. Based on the reviews and experiences on the internet, i have shortlisted a couple of models.

Samsung N140 and Asus 1005HA. (The latter is a shade costlier)

The N140 is for about 14k on ebay(after discount) eBay India: Samsung Notebook Mini Laptop - N140 / 1 Year Warranty

Asus approximately 16.5k. There is one available on this forum only.

Apart from the Intel Atom N280 in the asus vs 270 in the Samsung, is there any other compelling difference between the two? Any experience with the battery life as both of them are making tall claims about the same.

Usage is mostly surfing, reading documents and to some extent watching movies. Preferably a netbook that works in outdoor use. (Brighter light conditions)

both are fine, samsung price is really good.

batt is 6 cell, heard 280 saves little more but nothing very major

you'll still get 6-8 hours of battery

If the prices are almost same, I would go for 1005HA.

But if they differ by 2K, Samsung N140 seems to be the better deal.

I have also shortlisted samsung n138 ( which is the same spec netbook as samsung n140 minus windows xp and costs 1000 less) it has 97% of the normal keyboard size , non-glossy lcd screen and asus 1005ha as it has multitouch trackpad,. chicklet style keyboard but 92% of the normal size keyboard and has glossy screen so, can't read/watch outdoors,
samsung claims battery of 11 hours and asus 10.5 .
but real confusion is between n138 and newer version of samsung n140 which they are advertising now Samsung n140 which has got atom 280, windows 7 starter edition and 250 gig hard hard drive

here

eBay India: Samsung Netbook - Laptop - N140 Win 7 250GB N280 (item 380189137592 end time 24-Dec-2009 17:09:24 IST)
and it will cost 16 something in real world

so my order of preference is - 1) samsung n138 ( 2.5k is 2.5 k ) or 2)samsung n140 ( the atom 280 and 250 gig hard drive version) and then asus 1005ha

The new N140 does look good. However, as you said, there is also a premium added for win 7 in that.

Since the line is similar, doesn't n138 have an upgraded processor/hard disk version?

As such a RAM upgrade from 1GB to 2 GB would be necessary also. So there is a cost for that too.

every netbook barring few is upgradable to 2gb mininmum.

cheapest - samsung n128 same chasis which is under 13k it doesn't have stereo speakers, srs algorithims effect which n138 has, and bluetooth

n138 -14 something , atom 270, 160 gig, bt,srs, wifi b/g/n

older/running n140 atom 270, 160 , bt, srs, wifi b/g/n, win xp

latest n140 - atom 280, 250 gig hard drive , win 7

there is jump of 750-1000 rupess with every model starting from n128 at under or close 13k
waiting for the upgraded version of n138 with atom 280 , the same way n140 has upgraded their processor would be speculation as of now i have no news of that

there is new series of atom Chips called atom pinetail version coming, which has intel 3150 chipset instead of 945 . asus is including it their asus 1005 series called asus 1005PE which will be around 20k or above. it is a never ending process for consumer to make a choice. or decide what is the best bet or time. it depends on the time and money in hand for particular purpose u want that product for.

Why dont uou guys wait for sometime.
In 1-2 months, netbooks having the Pinetrail platform will come to India.
A few such netbooks have already been announced (Dell Mini 10, HP Mini 210, MSI U130,U135 and some Asus netbooks have beeen updated with an Atom N450).
These new N450 processors have a graphics component(Intel 3150) on the die and this 3150 can supposedly play 720p and 1080p videos seamlessly.
EDIT: It seems that reviews of the Asus 1005PE(Atom N450) have already been posted.

Guys, I was at Nehru Place yesterday and got a Samsung N-128 for my uncle for 13,700/- from a shop next to SMC with bill and warranty. Its really a steal for this price. I too was exploring the possibility of getting it through ebay but they don't accept SBI NetBanking for payments. Hope this helps.

There is a lot of sense in what you say. But when these new netbooks debut, they will be priced above 20K at least (and this is optimistic guess). So, for budget conscious buyers, still older lot still makes sense, if they know the limitations of the older models as compared to yet to be launched models.

older models going out are cheaper and offer tremendous value as the manufactures try to get clear of their inventory

I repeat, it is a never ending process for consumer to make a choice. or decide what is the best bet or time. it depends on the time and money in hand for particular purpose u want that product for.

wise people go for the value and funtions but some are wowed get sucked into the promised dream that the future product seems to deliver and pay premium for the new upcoming product and are the target of the advertisers.6 thou or over almost half more of the price for the movies 1080p and shade better performance, it is big jump in difference of money and big wait . with this thought process one is forever waiting. remember the true reason v r buying the netbook for , not the movies alone

do check the n140 specifications if ur buying that, the dealer wil try to paste you with ` there is no n140 with atom 280. 250 gig, when confronted with pr release with specifications he will say has not arrived, etc etc.. there is no point in getting old n140 with win xp and paying 1000 rs more. the choice should be between n138 and newer n140 with atom 280.hey sumitb answer , how much n138 and newer n140 was going for at brick and mortar nehru place

^^ Apart from the extra HDD space, the performance difference is marginal between the processors.

Is it even worth 2.5K extra? Beats me!

that's what i was saying, adding marginal featueres one top of the other makes every netbook costelier by 500 -1000 at each step that it reaches the notebook price point if one goes to buy best netbook out there, which would be nvidia ion based, with preinstalled win 7 i guess, so i guess n138 would be ideal, covers all the basics of a netbook pretty well. OS one can choose t install on one's own

I considered it, dropped the idea, battery pack portudes out, makes it little wobbly, glossy screen, 89% keyboard , samsung has the best keyboard ( if not the style) nearly full sized layout, close to notebook experience. only thing i'm considering at this point ( which is closing in in 3-4 days ) if any 11.6 incher with atom 280 close to this price point otherwise I'm settled on samsung and asus 1005ha a distant second

Between Samsung N138 and Lenovo S10-2, which is better?

Both have almost similar specs. The Lenovo has the N280 Atom compared to the N270 of Samsung, but I'm not sure if there'll be much difference. Although the white colour of Lenovo is tempting, the protruding battery puts me off. I believe the Samsung doesn't have a protruding battery.

Which one should I lean towards..?
