Had bought the D40 as a kit but sold the kit lens for an all round lens.

It is EF mount, originally meant for full frame (36mm x 24mm) cameras, but can be used with Canon digital cameras just like the EF-S mount lenses which are designed specifically for APS-C sized sensors. 50mm becomes 80 mm when used with APS-C cameras like 450D, 550D, 7D etc. It is a prime lens and not a zoom.

No way dude ! a 2x teleconvertor on a 75-300mm type zoom no matter how good should be a strict NO NO ! The image quality will be useless and focusing will be very difficult with such a dark viewfinder.

The 2x telecon is for the Sigma 70-210mm f2.8 lens for an effective 140-420mm f5.6 lens
