Slow(er) download speeds with MTNL Triband

I've recently (25th March) got a new Triband connection - the Rs. 495 combo unltd. I boldly went for it knowing its only 320kbps because most people i know using triband, whether on 256kbps or 1mbps are getting almost 2mbps (200kBps+) download speeds.

It started off pretty well - http downloads would max out at 235kBps (that's ~1.8mbps) when running multiple segments, BT was a little slower of course (yes, ports are correctly forwarded). Sometimes http downloads would be slower than the previous file, this was fixed by a quick lan card MAC address change+new external IP by resetting the modem. Over 7-8 days i managed to download about 70-80GB with downloads queued in both jD and vuze.

Of late though, speeds have drastically reduced, http is virtually crawling at 20-40kBps. In vuze though, torrents with a massive number of seeds/peers sometimes reach the 200kBps mark. On average, i would say my total download speeds have come down from 200+ to 100+.

I know I can't really complain because i should be getting only 40kBps based on my plan, but i'm sure there's something to this mess because BT downloads with a large number of sources still manage to hit the 200+kBps mark. Anyone with an idea of what's going on please share here.

p.s. forgot to mention my location. it's kharghar, navi mumbai.
and even after all this, mtnl triband ROX !

same here... if i m downloading from u torrent..it goes well above 150+ with healthy seeding...bt if i m using JD the speed sucks and i m on 1mbps :( i have been pestering the guys at local exchange for long now....bt they dnt knw a shit abt this.....

Me too. Till Friday, I was getting close to 150KB/s from sites like rapidshare, though I have 512kbps connection. On saturday, there was no connection for a few hours. When service resumed, speeds were drastically reduced. Since then I have been getting speeds of around 30KB/s. I am quite certain a lot of users are facing this issue.

Right, so it's confirmed. Friday was the day for me too acc to my bwmeter logs. It's probably load balancing what with all the new connections.

I was a bit (selfishly) sad to hear that MTNL extended the combo 495 offer for another month. More for others means less for me :eek:hyeah:

Anyway, we should be happy we're getting anything above our prescribed plans. Most others barely reach what the promise in the first place. Hope this is a temporary thing and we get our free 2mbps back!

My MTNL mumbai connection acted up on saturday and stopped working till monday. Thanks to our inhouse member Aladdin, the issue was resolved quickly. And yes i think my speeds have also reduced (still they are above my plan limit :bleh:) but whatever i was getting before, this is less than that. But i should not complain at all.

MTNL ROX

may be the profiles got allocated.Or you either crossed 100gb download. My speed reduced after i crossed 100gb limit. Now me getting proper 1mbps speed before it was 2mbps

hey all.

so, my doubts stands confirmed too, MTNL has got some shit going...my net too was gone for a few hours on saturday and ever since its started back, torrents with max seeding @ 30k give only 70-80k that too struggles but remains btw 40k to 80k but once i cap seeding to 0k, i start getting 225k, so dunno whats happening, btw, speedtest.net results also show a drastic diff in the speed tests i've done b4 and have done since saturday onwards. I am on the 512k ul plan and b4 saturday all was well.

I am jus starting to wonder if MTNL has enforced FUP...

Well, i've crossed 100gb a few days after the speeds reduced, at the time it was probably slightly under 80gb. But it's possible too. Because at my cousin's place too earlier the speeds were good and later they reduced. Not sure after how many gb. But this time everything seems to have happened after friday.

earlier i used to cap uploads at 18k no probs. but these days to get half decent speeds, i have to set it around 12-14k. the whole torrents being faster than single http downloads probably means that there is some kind of speed cap on each single outbound connection.

on http downlds i get 14-17.5 kbps max im on the 512kbps un plan. but when i use idm i get 64kbps max. experiencing this problem since the start of the plan upgrading. torrent speeds are fine so i dont really knw whether mtnl i caping http speeds but how am i gettin good speeds on idm and that too a great margin:huh:

Wow , you get 225 kBps on 512 kbps and then say MTNL is FUP'ing ?

My guess is they've capped speeds on each individual outbound http connection to the ~15kBps mark. since the download managers use multiple segments for each file, you get the sum total of each segment's speed.

LOL, yeah baby!

Yup! http speeds are back up but they don't seem to be holding very steady like earlier. Too much fluctuation.

Incidentally, this morning a lady called from mtnl asking if my net is working fine. It's been 15 days since i've got my conn. I told her that it's working but speeds have been down for a week.

Anyways, back to dloads .....

all of a sudden some of the sites are not opening for me.

like the "other" forums. also a few international sites & for some reason TPB as well.

im on UL999 1mpbs plan but sometime this afternoon i realised the speeds were fluctuating & were down to nearly 0.5Mbps but was back up to normal by evening.

However im wondering if theres a DNS prob now... anyone else having probs?

I'm having the exact same problem.. I'm on the same plan too..
Damn.. From afternoon, my downloads from some sites are also stopped.. :(

their 1504 nr has been sayin - all our agents are busy. If not that, when it rings they manually disconnect it or it just rings n goes blank.

No point registering anything on weekends I guess?
