Doc Holliday,
Sorry! I missed reading your edited post till now. Yes! You are right. Hope you have tried using them as planned. How are the results?
Finally, High end DAPs are becoming a reality. Evolving from pricey, brick sized, terrible usability thingies, we now have Sony ZX1 and Calyx M which seem to tick the right boxes. I am still looking at FiiO X5 due to it's affordable price point. Based on the short reviews so far, it at least seems to get the sound and basic UI right, though many things are still hoped to be fixed by the time it gets released in March. I would probably get them in April/May, finances allowing.
ZX1 may be a great choice if it drops a bit in price. The build quality and UI seem to be very good and the sound seems to be pretty neutral with a slight treble tilt as well. But some issues like not pairing with all DACs may need to be ironed out. It doesn't support DSD yet, but I have not even upgraded to 24/96, so that's the least of my worries.
Calyx seems to be keeping close tabs on the head-fi thread. I like how they are changing the product even at this late stage of development. With a full SD slot, a microSD slot, support for DSD, good UI, lowered output impedance - fantastic feature set. I will still wait for reviews to see if they deliver fully on the promise. At this point, I am more inclined towards Calyx M than ZX1, though I cannot afford either of them for a few months at least.
