hey,
I am currently in Mysore and haven car back in Chandigarh.

I wanted to know if I would need to pay any road tax and apply for a Karnataka registration number here in Mysore.

my purpose of staying in Mysore is residency. I would be staying for 2-3 years.

please help, If anyone knows what are the formalities, how much is the tax, if any?

It would be better if you post this thread in the General Talk section as you would get more responses over there.
 
1. You need to get an NOC from Chd RTO.
2. You need to pay road tax and get new registration number from Mysore RTO.

Teambhp.com etc have details of the procedure you will need. basically you can only drive for some months (varies by state and RTO's mood sometimes :p) without the stuff. For more than a year definitely you need road tax and registration. You can also apply for road tax refund from Chd, but it will take a long time and may never come :(

Alternative is to keep driving and hope that you dont get caught :D
