I'm looking for a new laptop for next year and I am looking very seriously at the Dell XPS 15, the MacBook Pro (Retina) and the yet-to-be-released Dell Precision M3800. I am currently studying engineering but also do some film making as a bit of hobby. Currently for class I use programs such as MATLAB, Solidworks 2012, Autodesk Inventor Pro etc. I also then use Adobe Premier Pro, After Effects, Photoshop etc. I also want something lightweight that I can carry around with me. I also consider a good screen to be essential. Which of these three would you choose and if you have any other ideas what are they?

If budget is no constraint, as of now, it's an easy choice to wait for Precision M3800. You could also wait for Haswell refreshes of Macbook Pro with RD / Asus Zenbook 15 / XPS 15 / Samsung Ativ Book 8, but it is important to note those are consumer laptops and not professional workstations - you will lose out on ISV certification, support and most crucially a workstation GPU. For professional apps like Solidworks or MATLAB, a Quadro or Firepro GPU is an absolute must. Maybe HP and Lenovo will introduce light weight updates for their Elitebook / W series laptops, but I haven't heard anything. In short, wait for Precision M3800.

The precision is goood. But If I were you, I would wait till Novemeber for all Haswell Forces to come out :)
