Help-Cant logon even in safe mode in xp

I am unable to logon to xp in any mode. The pc restarts just before login page. In the safe mode i get the message to press esc to skip loadin stpd.sys before restart.
Got any ideas how to solve this.
i have googled the same only to find that a concrete solution is not given in any forum.

why waste time troubleshooting ... just format and install windows again :|

first u give a try to sfc/ scannow from cmd prompt if u can access it els do a clean format...

Did it restarts further after pressing ESC?
U can wait to let sptd.sys to load, sometime takes 5 - 10 min..
If still, u couldn't get into safe mode, try to choose Recovery Console from XP botable CD..
