Fedora 10 Cambridge Released

The Fedora Project, a Red Hat sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration project, today announced the availability of Fedora 10, the latest version of its free, open source operating system distribution.

The new release offers the latest stable version of GNOME 2.24 and KDE 4.1, faster boot experience (powered by Plymouth), better printing, better webcam support, improved wireless network connection sharing, better software maintenance and update (powered by PackageKit and RPM 4.6), and virtualization storage. Plus, it adds a new security tool for IDS (Intrusion Detection System) called SecTool. In Fedora 10, users will enjoy a brand new theme called "Solar," and a new lightweight desktop environment called LXDE. Developers and system administrators will enjoy the power of Eclipse 3.4 and NetBeans IDE.

Highlights of Fedora 10:
  • Linux kernel 2.6.27 (with improved webcam and WiFi support);
  • GNOME 2.24;
  • KDE 4.1;
  • Eclipse 3.4;
  • RPM 4.6;
  • Faster boot;
  • An enhanced version of the PackageKit package manager;
  • An updated PulseAudio sound server;
  • Improved Apple Macintosh hardware support;
  • Improved HDTV support in X.Org;
  • A new icon theme called Echo;
  • Remote virtualization.

The Solar theme is certainly a very good one...

About the Register link "salvation for the Ubuntu weary", its funny and sad... Fedora used to be the buggy one during it's "Core" days because they used to release cutting edge stuff... now Ubuntu seems to be unreliable even though they dont release as cutting edge packages but Fedora has been stable ever since they dropped the "Core" from the release names... :D

I read a blog post (cant recall the link now) where Fedora are claiming highest user base of about 9 million while Ubuntu's 1-year old claim is at 8 million users... will be interesting to see if Fedora overtakes Ubuntu in the coming weeks and months...

edit: found the link: yokozar: Estimating our user base makes me want to contribute more

finished installing...

a few things you would need to know.

I dont prefer using NetworkManager.
To uninstall:
Code:
# yum remove NetworkManager

system-config-network somehow doesn't save the settings well.

If you plan to configure your network, do it via the command line

to edit your DNS:
Code:
# gedit /etc/resolv.conf
to edit IP,Subnet Mask, Gateway:
Code:
# gedit /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/ifcfg-eth0

Installing Nvidia drivers:

get the rpmfusion repository: (merged livna, freshrpms, dribble)
Code:
# rpm -Uvh [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url] [url]http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm[/url]

Code:
# yum update

Code:
# yum install kmod-nvidia

Restart
Fedora 10 apparently automatically sets the display settings, you wont find the usual /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I guess you wudnt need to set any thing.

Althoug if you need to create it, try:
Code:
# Xorg -configure :1

thats as far i've gone for now.. will update more sooner. :)

@spynic: try the suggested kernel boot option "vga=0x318" , it worked for me (at least for the preview release) on my 8800gt :D

Looks promising, I am downloading the KDE-live media. I hope Plymouth runs with my 8600gt.
