Difference in Performance: i5-2520M vs i5-2540M vs i7-2620M (Lenovo x220, MacbookPro)

I would like to find out the difference primarily between i5-2540M vs i7-2620M. My tasks will be primarily technical computations such as on tools like Matlab and heavy computational programming. Will the difference be substantial if I switch to the i7 processor? Kindly note that both processors are dual core processors.

The Macbook Pro 13" probably offers i5-2410M and i7-2620M. I am primarily interested in the X220 by Lenovo which offers i5-2410M, i5-2520M, i5-2540M and i7-2620M.

Save money and get the 2520M or 2540M. ~5 % difference at the MAX between these and the i7. Not worth the upgrade at all. The difference will not be apparent.

1) As per my crude calculations. If the processor cache is the same.

i7 = 2.7 * 10^9 operations per sec

i5_2.3 = 2.3 * 10^9 operations per sec

i5_2.6 = 2.6 * 10^9 operations per sec

i7 to i5_2.3 difference in performance = 17% roughly

i7 to i5_2.6 difference in performance = 3.8% roughly

2) If the frequency is the same and cache is different.

i7 = 4 MB

i5 = 3 MB

i7 to i5 percent improvement = 33% (roughly) [Please correct me if I am wrong]

3) Taking both cache and frequency into account. If I simply add the two although I am sure that would be incorrect.

i7 to i5_2.3 = 50% improvement

i7 to i5_2.6 = 33% improvement roughly

i5_2.6 to i5_2.3 = 13% improvement roughly
