Is your friend Hell Bent on getting himself an i5 ? Or even AMD Rigs would do ? Asking since an AMD config would go cheaper ... depends upon what he is going to use it for ...

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

i5 750 ~ 10k

MSi H55-CD53 ~ 5.5k (ITWares - There are cheaper ones but mATX form factor)

1TB HDD Seagate ~3.2k

2GB DDR3 Corsair Value ~ 2.5k

LG DVD+RW ~ 1k

CM 310 ~ 1.5k (Or Zebby Bijli ~1k)

FSP SAGA 400 ~ 2k

ATi HD 5670 ~ 6k

It still Wouldnt be able to make it at 25k , W/O Monitor - i5+P55 Kinda shoots the costs haywire :|

A similar config but with a 555BE/ X4 Athlon would keep extra moolah for a monitor ,

General Purpose Home Machine + Casual Gamer - From DA Saar's PC Buying guide would do good probably ?

1. i-5 760 ~ 10.2k

2. Giga H-55M-UD2H~5.7k(For ur needs no difference between H-55 and P-55. UD2 boards of Giga have excellent quality)

4. 1 TB HDD Seagate ~ 3.1k

5. 2gb ddr3 ram Corsair Value ~ 2.35k

6. FSP SAGAII 400 ~ 2k

7. DVD rom ~ 0.95k

8. elite 310 cabby ~ 1.5k

Total: This itself costs 26k w/o GPU.

So as l33T says go for AMD solution.

CPU: AMD AthlonII X4 635~5k/AMD PhenomII X4 945~7k.(Consider the PhenomII X2 555BE if u are ready to gamble on unlocking. ~80%+ unlock success rate)

Mobo: MSI 785GM-E51~4.1k/Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3~5k(All solid caps with USB 3.0)

I guess u would know this. Get the 512MB version of HD5670 ~ 5k. No point spending extra for 1GB version.

If u are ok with 2nd hand stuff there was a ~6months old Sparkle GTS250 ~ 4.5k on sale in the market. Get a CX400 and this card.

you guys must have gone through the Encounter with noobs thread...

its a similar case...

for him...

intel>>>>>>amd...

no matter how much i try to explain it to him...its intel only for him...

given a budget of 12k for the cpu and mobo..

what would you guys recommend..in both amd and intel..

I recommended him a X2 550,555 too..as im using a unlocked X2 550..

but amd overheats, amd is slow, amd is old...i feel like thrashing him..

If he's so into intel and price only a C2Q/C2D - EOL Products seem to make sense to me , No use going for a i5 setup , then comprimising on the GPU , c2q+mobo costs ~12k ,500gb hdd, zebby which is kinda sensible as you can get yourself a good GPU...with an option of upgrading when he can rake in the extra moolah , sorry if this sounds noobish , but this is all that I can think of... :)

Going in for the C2Q/C2D wont make sense to him...

he wants it to be futureproof..

should i tell him to wait..

If any cheaper I5 is going to come soon...

Go for the i-530 then. Very power efficient proccy.

Core i3 530~5.3k

Gigabyte H55M-S2~4.5k(only CPU VRM Solid caps)/Gigabyte H55M-UD2H~5.7k(All solid caps)

Else as l33t says the

Q8300~7.3k

Gigabyte G41M-ES2L~2.6k

Anyways both the LGA-775 and the LGA-1156 sockets wont be receiving any processors in the future. They are gonna be replaced with Sandy Bridge processors with LGA-1155 socket.

So both are not future proof. One advantage of LGA-1156 is he can replace the i-3 530 with a 2nd hand i-5 760 or similar 2 years down the line.

All the i-5 7xx quads will be priced in the $190-210 bracket and there are no cheaper i-5 quads coming up this year. Next year new socket and chipset with new Sandy Bridge architecture.

The H-61 chipset is set to replace G41 and the H-67/P-67 will replace the H-55/P-55 chipsets. So all the current intel sockets will be EOLed Q1 2011(except LGA-1366 which will receive an upgrade to LGA-2011 in Q3 2011 IINM)

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/89?vs=143

Q8400vs i-3 540 (As Q8300 wasnt available for comparison)

The i-3 530 trumps the Q8300 in situations where all 4 cores are not utilized completely. So decide accordingly.

Thanks a lot..

really appreciate it...

i think the I3-530 seems to be a good option...

since a quad doesnt seem to be necessary...

Core i3 530~5.3k

Gigabyte H55M-S2~4.5k

is a good VFM option i guess...

moreover, wont need to compromise on other components..

again, thanks a lot.. :)

I was under an impression that ragz needed a quad core rig since his friend was into video editing/mixing type , so hence I thought he'd need 4 cores to get the job done , had the i3-530 in mind but then i3 is a 2 core processor which may fail in highly threaded applications , hence the c2q suggestion ...DA put it pretty well the H55 mobo will do good for a while including the 1156 .The G41-ES2L is a pretty good mobo , I have a neighbor who uses it , very low-frills motherboard type...try convincing your friend on the AMD/Intel funda :p
