Disciple
I have decided to upgrade my rig after a long time. I would be running Kubuntu as the primary OS. My primary needs would be development, d/ling and watching HD movies.

Q: What is your budget?

15K +(sale of old components)

Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)

CPU - AMD Athlon X2 4000+

Motherboard - Asus M2NMXSE

Speakers - Creative inspire 2.1

UPS - APC BY500-IN

RAM - Transcend 2GB + Dynet 1GB

Monitor - Dell ST2420L

SMPS - Techcom 400W

WifiCard - Netgear WG311v3

DVD Writer - MoserBaer

Cabinet -6 yr old Iball Cabinet

HDD - WD caviar blue 500gb

Samsung keyboard and mouse

Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)

Monitor - Dell ST2420L

WifiCard - Netgear WG311v3

DVD Writer - MoserBaer

Speakers - Creative inspire 2.1

UPS - APC BY500-IN

HDD - WD caviar blue 500gb

Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.

Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component

Yes, will upgrade the following within 6 months

This would be final configuration

Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)

Bangalore

Open to online purchase

Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market

No

Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware

Download rig, 24x7 operation

Watching HD movies

Programing

Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?

Will play games that require minimum graphics like FIFA 11. So I would add a GPU only if onboard graphics cannot support my needs.

Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage

Gaming - 1280 x 728

Desktop - 1920 x 1080

Q: Are you looking to overclock?

No

Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?

Windows XP

Linux - Ubuntu

CPU - AMD PhenomII X4 840 - Rs.4900
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H - Rs. 4100
RAM - Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333MHz - Rs.1100
SMPS - Gigabyte Superb 460 - Rs.2000
Cabinet -CM Elite 310 - Rs. 1500

Rs.13,600

This should make a good upgrade. Although try to find the Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H ~ 4.8k (Hard to find) as it has USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps ports.

For the rest of the cash you can go for 2GB RAM (Making it 2+2 GB)
Else if you need slightly more gaming power you can save a bit on the processor, get the AthlonII X3 440 for ~3.3k and invest the amount in a ATI HD 4670 1GB GDDR3 ~ 3.4k

Processor AMD Athlon II X4 640 4300

Motherboard Gigabyte 785GMT-US2H 3400

RAM Corsair XMS3 1600MHz CL9 2x2GB 2600

GPU On Board HD4200

Cabinet NZXT Gamma 2100

PSU Corsair CX400 2400

Total 14800

Included a Quadcore CPU as it would be good for programming stuff...

I could have suggested you a cheaper cabinet like CM Elite 310 but suggested Gamma coz it would be good for future upgrades...

Thanx Dark Angel.
If I do go with 4GB RAM and ATI HD 4670 1GB GDDR3 GPU, will the PSU be able to handle that or will I need to upgrade the PSU too?

How about X2 550 BE, got one recently and managed to unlock the other 2 cores. Its a bit of a gamble though I guess

Without breaking a sweat :) The Gigabyte Super 460 unit is a good one and many in TE are using it without much trouble with even more demanding configs! If you want to save a bit you can opt for the 785G that Hades has suggested

@Bottle - Yeah the 550BE unlock probability has reduced these days :(

Go for the PhenomII X4 840 in case you decide to go with a Quad. Its got slightly better power efficiency the AthlonII X4 and the highest clocked Quad in the sub 5k category and also the best VFM IMHO.

Thanx all. Based on the suggestions so far this is what I am planning to buy. Please give your feedback. Also can you tell me about the driver compatibility of these hardware with a 64 bit Ubuntu OS.

RAM - Corsair 2GBx2 DDR3 1333MHz - Rs.2200

SMPS - Gigabyte Superb 460 - Rs.2000

Cabinet NZXT Gamma 2100

Gigabyte 785GMT-US2H is currently not available at smc.i would suggest GIGABYTE GA-MA78LMT-S2(rs.2550) or Asus M4A78LT-M LE(rs.2600) as u have to add gpu to play fifa 11.

CPU: AthlonII X3 440 ~3250

RAM: Kingston or corsair ddr3 1333Mhz ~1200

GPU: Sapphire 5670 512 MB ~4400

PSU: Gigabyte superb or Fsp saga II 400W ~2000/1900

Thanx for ur suggestions.

I am getting the folowing quotes from a dealer. What do you guys think about the prices?

Amd Phenom II x4 840 - 5100

GA 880GM-ud2h 4500

corsair DD3 1333 2gb x2 2300

NZXT Gamma 2100

logitech mk320 wireless set 1200

He doesnt stock Gigabyte superb 460. Could you guys suggest an alternative PSU. I am getitng a quote of 2600 for FSP Saga 2 500w . Will Corsair CX400 be enough if i decide to add a graphcis card in future?

^^ he has quoted you high prices for the above components... in most places 880GM-UD2H is selling for 3.9k and Phenom II x840 for 4900... RAM and Cabby price looks ok to me...

And as far as PSU is concerned... yes CX400 is a decent PSU and can handle GPUs like HD6850 , HD5770 etc etc if you would be adding one in the future...
