looking for linux projects

Well after a lot of confusion I am planning to do my final year project on linux platform. I would appreciate if TE members cab throw in few ideas :)
 
The Linux journal HOWTO's is what first hits my mind . Almost every product that comes on linux is opensource or offer the code for educational purposes. So in that respect Sourceforge's Software map is a great place to start as well documented for projects of all sizes ,areas of expertise and complexity.
