Inverter Vs Generator

I am thinking about portable Generators instead of inverter.I heard after 3 years we need to change the batteries. Considering 80% of the cost goes towards the batteries, in 3-4 years times you would be spending double the price.

Lot of silent Generators are now available which run on kerosene or diesel. Portability is also and added advantage.

But not peace of mind. Would you start the generator if the light goes off at 2 late night?

Generator is only good for official purposes or heavy load IMO.

Do you sleep with lights switched ON ?

LOL j/k

Inverter ,not only they keep your equipments in good condition. But serves the purpose As JuGGa mentioned.

Less hassle, peace of mind.

He meant power or current by "light". This is the way we speak at North; Light chali gayi means power cut.

Is change of battery mandatory after 3 years?

If your battery is a lcoal one than yes, a good battery from exide and other brand will last 5 years easily and at times more than that. It depends upon the hours of power cut you face and the weather as well.

Short frequent powercuts - Inverter

Long scheduled powercuts - Portable Generator (if they arent at night)

Long unpredictable frequent powercuts - Inverter+generator

If you plan to run AC,etc or want all comforts during powercut, get a 5-10KVA generator paired with a UPS

Is change of battery mandatory after 3 years?

For the cheaper ones: yes

Annual cost will come out to be similar for longer lasting ones

Occasional Power Cuts or Scheduled Load Shedding of Upto 3-4 Hrs - Inverter. (Air Conditioner wont work on Normal inverters though)

Battery issues - If maintained properly & charging discharging cycles are regular 5 years is std life & excessive loads, sudden load ( e.g Mixer Grinder) can cause battery life shortened.

Power cuts of more than 6 hours continuously or in case continuous power is reqd say for AC , Computers etc - Generator (Preferably from Yamaha / Honda / Mahindra / Kirloskar)

Even generators need maintenance & servicing regularly (maybe every 6 months - 9 months depending upon usage & load). Cost of Diesel / Fuel.

So in end of say 3 years you will be at almost same cost for both Inverter & generator.

So overall you need to see your needs, power cut range & then go for appropriate choice.

If you buy a Exide EL+ battery with timely addition of distill water,it can last around 7 years easily.

A generator having a engine means its going to be noisy and has a exhaust so you can only place it outdoors(may also need to take permission from your neighbors) .Since it has has lots of moving parts you will need to service it regularly.
