Features in a 'state of the art' forum?

What are the features you expect/ like to see when you use a forum? For eg. I get a bit irked these days if a forum doesn't support the feature which allows you to see part of a thread's content just by hovering over its title..
So what is yours? ( trying to dev a new one and your replies will help me greatly in that)
 
when you're running a large forum, you need to have an effective features/performance. All those bling new features look fine when you're testing them out on an empty install of any forum, but as the no of posts etc increases, they will load the servers a lot.

A lot of the features wont even be visible to you... they're more back end in nature
