what is h.264?

i want to clear some noob doubts related to h.264-

what is h.264?
do i need a high end system to run video in this format?
is it related to bluray in anyway?
 
h.264, like xvid and divx are codec standards used to compress video mainly to reduce file size. What is important to know is that h.264 is superior and xvid/divx are obsolete.

However, the compression advantage of h.264 is also a disadvantage. The decoding process gobbles up a large chunk of processing power and ram resources.

Old systems might not be able to play most h.264 video even if it has all the necessary codec's installed. Sometimes it may skip frames or the processor might go ballistic trying to keep up or your computer might restart.
