does the external drive make some beep beep sounds when starting and sometimes during transferring data? or is it a bad piece?
 
It means it's not getting enough power. You need to use less than 1 foot USB 3 cable to get enough power to the drive if using a single cable or you can buy the Y usb cable from WD which is always out of stock.
