vcd ( .dat files ) playing problem on win98 SE

I am unable to play VCDs with .dat files on my multimedia system
from 12 Feb 2006 (sunday) . I am using Windows 98 SE .

the error messages are :

Real One Player (ver 2.0) ->
A General error has occured :
The source filter for this file could not be loaded.

WinAmp (ver 5.04) ->
MCI error : incompatible media

And an expert from a vcd manufacturing company responded that
my OS could be corrupted .
I have reinstalled the OS . the problem still exists .

I have installed the vlc player able to play vcd s only thru it .

what could be corrupt on my system ? I am keen to correct it .
please help me .

I have tried both methods . And I am able to run thru the

vlc player ( it has its own plugin codecs ) .

In particular I want to run the vcd s thru the RealPlayer . And

I reinstalled it also .

get all the latest drivers(display/sound/directx) , if your hardware is old, and no newer drivers are available ,then find and install an older version of real player, that might help if the player is facing compatibility problems with older hardware.

I think my HW is not old . I have P4 2.6GHz on intel

Mother Board And all its Drivers are upto date .

I was able to play the vcd s on the same Hardware

till recently . And the problem appeared suddenly .

I doubt if the basic video codec is missing or certain

driver is corrupted . I am unable to find it .

BTW I have reinstalled the real player . I still have the

problem .

And I am satisfied with my version .

Earlier I was able in playing the vcd s thru it .

I have recently downloaded the vlc player

and it is working fine for the vcd s .

I am curious to correct the corrupted file(s) /

the codecs on my system sothat I donot get

any problem in accessing the media thru my

tv tuner card .

( I can use the remote control only for the tv tuner card sw

which was playing the vcd s till the 12 Feb 2006 . Now It is

not playing the vcd s alone )

Run it thru GSpot, I've found most (maybe all?) dat files are just some form of mpg files :)

BTW I would NEVER use real player for ANYTHING..real sucks. I use either powerdvd 6, media player classic or zoomplayer professional.
 
dude straight way open the files with media player2 use openwith then select mplayer2,n thats it ,it will start playing but check ur display drivers i.e. go into desktop properties n go to settings keep desktop resol to minimum 800X600 n 16bit minimum colour depth .
 
My sincere Thanks to all for your help .

I have checked it on the wmp (ver 6.4) on windows 2000
partition and it is playing the vcd dat files .

Filters in use were :
default direct sound
mpeg audio decoder ( mpeg1 ver2.0 )
mpeg video decoder ( mpeg1 ver2.0 )
video renderer

And on my win 98 SE , I played a .mpg video file on the
wmp (ver 6.4) & found that the above filters are in use .

does It mean that the codecs are okay on win 98 ?
what could be the problem on my win98 ! why I am
getting the error that source filter not loaded !
