As expected, another ruckus over the bill. But what caught my attention was the irony in this statement.

"Even after passage of triple talaq bill in Lok Sabha+ the practice is continuing, a woman in Moradabad was given instant talaq over dowry," minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said to underline the urgency of approving the proposed legislation into law.

Dowry has been illegal since introduction of Dowry prohibition act 1961. Both the giver and receiver of dowry are guilty and can be pushed by up to 5 years of jail time. Are the girls parents and the boy/his family booked on the dowry charges yet?

Apart from the abuse of 498A, how many genuine victims have benefited from the legal provisions?

So why does the law minister believe that urgently passing this bill into law would suddenly change things for the victims of triple talaq?

Is this going to be anything more than a paper law? When are people going to come to the realization that there is a serious law enforcement problem in the country and that it has to be dealt with. Till that happens, no law is going to get enforced the way they should i.e. unless its a bill to help the politicians themselves in their misdeeds,

It was the supreme court which finally decided that Triple Talaq is unconstitutional and gave directions to govt to put and end to the practice and the govt puts a law together because of that direction and now wants to take credit for it and use it as a tool for scoring some political brownie points while congress and MIM also want their own by opposing it.

Also, what about the fact that our laws are so archaic that substantial reforms are required all over the place. It is laughable that we call our country secular despite that fact that we have a separate set of laws for each religion giving consideration to the customs, traditions and religious sentiments of each religion. Secularism means complete disregard for religion and religious sentiments in matters of law and administration.

That link just shows that Dowry act is not applicable to dower/mahr (which is money or property given by groom's family to the bride's family or bride). Dowry (money/property given by bride's side to groom) should still be punishable.

Well, in any case, its not its like the system if functional for Hindus either? If I go and complain to the police that a dowry exchange is taking place for a certain marriage, will they go and book those parties? Even after marriage, victims of dowry harassment are rarely able to use the law.. Corrupt police officers only see it as an opportunity to extract money from the accused's family. to Its only the abusers that are often able to use the law.

Its the same for everything else too. A person stealing Rs 100 will get jailed for 2 years, but a person who stole in crores usually walks way or gets royal treatment even if they go to jail. The quantum of punishments are also very little. Unlawful confinement carries a sentence of just Rs 500 fine.

The legal system is screwed up and needs change.
