Saw this on reddit about M&M XUV

reminded me of the incident couple of year ago, when Toyota said similar thing.
their statement was something like - "it didn't collided PROPERLY, so airbags didn't get deployed".

Ever since the Takata fiasco occurred. I'm really wary of the airbags in any car.

Nothing is failure proof. Chance of failure will always be there as a percentage no matter which brand and which country and which product. Forcing a product recall won't make that chance of failure become zero either.

When an accident happens, there is always a chance that safety features like these won't work. Even if they do work as intended, there is no guarantee that they will effectively save you. Wearing a helmet won't save you when you fall under the wheels of a truck. A colleagues wife died instantly after a very minor fall from a stationary bike Things like that happen too. All safety features and regulations are there to increase the odds of survival a wee bit when you meet with unforeseen incidents.

So, it is most important for people to try their best in reducing the odds of an accident happening in the first place by being responsible drivers. Reducing the odds of an accident happening would reduce the chances of air bags having to be deployed or for them to fail during the process. When there a 1 in 1000 chance of something failing, the most effective way of deceasing that further to make the chance of needing that 1 in 1000 too.

Thats true but forcing a recall will make sure companies put the better quality stuff in the first place or incurr additional costs in repairing fixes and lose credibility. When they charge lakhs for it least you expect is to them to work. The paid media wont show these incidents of lapses by mahinda and other companies.

The point is that those safety measures are not a replacement for responsible driving. No matter what you do, the failure rate is not going to become zero If the failure rate is 0.01%, they may manage to make it 0.005% while increasing the cost But, the fact remains that there is still a chance of failure. So, the only thing that you can do more is to reduce the chances of getting into a situation where the success or failure of that feature decides your life.

too many morons on roads who will kill you not matter your mistake or theirs. Better have a safe car that helps than expecting my safe driving will lead to zero accidents. Specially valid on highways where now every car easily speeds to 120-140 where even a S class may not protect you.

Well, then more/better regulation (and its implementation) is needed to control those morons. Just putting the regulation on car manufacturer is hardly a solution that is going to help. They can always produce a car that is 50% costlier and whose safety features are 0.05% less prone to failure, but how is that going to help in the event of a collision that happens at 140Kmph and both cars are rendered into mincemeat?

Working airbags and structural quality wont make a car 50% expensive. Its the lack of rules that allow comoanies to sell anything here. The same companies sell safer cars while for india they use poorer quality stuff. Most international models in india are of lesser grade as here tbey can get away with it by making lighter cars with airbags and abs systems that hardly work. Forget the cheaper cars where cost cutting in car frame and body is done even in a car like endeavor which costs 35 lakhs plus ford has removed chassis parts that help car remain more rigid and relatively safer just to save 5-10k rs. My Creta has such poor brakes for a car its size and it inspires no confidence in sudden braking even with ABS. Im 100% sure the creta in other countries is much more safer and with better safety features. Remember swift variant used to come with different braking quality just to save a few bucks by maruti.

You mean the same lack of rules and lack of enforcement that let people drive recklessly and leading to majority of the accidents in the country? But, yeah, lets just ignore all the reckless driving and the necessity to control that madness and just blame the companies for not making the cars as safe as their counterparts in other countries where they probably cost more than in India and are driven in a lot better and predictable conditions than the hell that we call the Indian roads.

Improving safety and reducing chance of failures requires research and customizing/tuning/calibrating for local conditions and it costs money and after a threshold point, a lot of money, a cost which a lot of Indians are not willing to spend. But yeah, lets just pretend that the drivers are never part of the problem, its the cars and the car companies that are always the problem. How to ensure that the airbags deploy when somebody can ram you at every possible angle that a car can be rammed at How to ensure people survive when they ram each other at 150 Kmph while one of them is driving on the wrong side and the other is drunk. There are the problems that car companies have a responsibility to find solutions for, because after all, the drivers cannot be at fault.

How very typical of a country where people have lead public protests against proposals to increase of penalties for drunk driving.

As per latest statistics, there are about 400-500 deaths (ignoring the injured) / day in road accidents across the country. How many of them are strictly due to air bag failures or other quality issues?
