Graphic Cards Radeon 300 series launch date & pricing

Did AMD have to clock the GPU too high to match the 980 that they had to resort to liquid cooling?
actually it runs at lower clocks than the average gpu of that segment.
The thing is they have an air-cooled version which is the standard fury whereas the liquid cooled one called fury x is being marketed by amd as 'an overclockers dream'.
it's more of a marketing thing than an actual need.
 
^^ Clock rates cannot be compared across GPU's like that. A GPU with a lower clock may perform better than one that with a higher clock depending on the overall architecture and the extent of heat generated for a specific clock also depends on the architecture.

I think the Fury X requires the water cooling. Its specified as such in the AMD website if you look at the link I posted in #2. Custom air cooling and liquid cooling has always been left to the manufacturers, It is only where its absolutely necessary that its made as part of the stock design. AMD using a liquid cooling setup in the stock design indicates that its more of a requirement than just marketing.

In any case, lets see how it fare once the benchmarks come out.

^^ I had already posted it in post #18 (Guru3D link) in this very thread. Anyway, I would be less inclined to believe in benchmarks released by the manufacturer whether its nVidia or AMD. They always find some way to sabotage the results. Be it by using a less optimal or buggy driver for the competitor or selectively choosing games or whatever else comes to mind.

Yep, manufacturer sourced benches are not reliable enough to decide a clear winner but in this case it does indicate the performance envelope of fury.
At this point, i'm more interested in knowing how big a difference does hbm make vs. gddr5. (and if the tonga's delta compression made it's way into the fury)
The nda on fury is lifting on the 24th (unconfirmed).

Amd won't be able to compete in the mid-high range with this line-up. the 380 costs and performs the same as a gtx 960 but uses more power.
the 390 costs and performs around the same as a gtx 970 whereas again, it loses out on tdp. only advantage of the 390 is more ram.
unlocked tonga performance is also quite limited (5-12% more than a 280x) so i don't know how they plan to survive.
in fact the 'x' versions of the older 200 series seem better value.

It doesnt make sense to buy the R9390X at those rates, looks like the 970 continues as the vfm offering in this segment.
 
I don't know if retailers will hike prices or stick with this.
btw, the r9 285 and r9 380 are identical gpu's so you can try haggling for a discount on the 'older' model ;)

Thing is though, if there isnt a clear performance gap I would rather just get Nvidia. Good drivers/works better with most games, lower power draw, less heat and noise etc. I have been sticking with Nvidia as long as I have had PCs. I would jump ship if the offer was good but this isnt.
 
no real performance gap between the 285/380 and gtx 960. you're better off with nvidia.
there were rumors of a 960ti with a 192-bit bus but i don't think nvidia will play that card now even if it exists since amd has offered no competition in the mid-range.

Anybody know if the new powertune and frame rate targeting control features are being implemented on the 300 series hardware?
because that would mean it could also make its way into older gpus too. but i suppose that's just wishful thinking.

Similarly Powertune is confirmed for the FURY X, 390X, 390 & 380 but not necessarily other GPU's -

Not all products feature all technologies – check with your component or system manufacturer for specific model capabilities."

No idea about older GPU's though...

Yea, i know that gcn 1.2 chips i.e. bonaire, hawaii and tonga will have these features.
I should have specified i meant the older gcn 1.0 chips namely tahiti and pitcairn. amd is as usual very vague about the supported chips and their footnotes are rubbish.
I know they won't have trueaudio or free-sync since that is hardware dependent.
Just wanted to know if we can expect frtc and new powertune in a driver update.

Similar stuff in Vmod Forum too, concurring, nothing revolutionary that AMD shoud be proud of, rather worrying since sheer numbers, that are LESS in a bench than those from nvidia, is the last thing they would want right now. If the above is true, win for 980ti.

Still would advise myself to take out my salt-truck ;) , drivers are broke too..well maybe.
