If you upgrade to a modern processor, It would use DDR4 even if some boards still support DDR3. Price isn't really that much different, and running faster RAM benefits some games and apps. The bonus is that on your next upgrade cycle, you will already have the RAM as DDR3 isn't going to be around much longer.
