Google Play prepaid vouchers now available in India

Starting today, you can use Google Play prepaid vouchers to purchase digital content on Google Play.

Over the coming weeks, you will find Google Play prepaid vouchers worth INR 500, INR 1000 and INR 1500 at select stores of Vijay Sales and Spice Hotspot in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata & Jaipur.

Simply ask the cashier at the register for a Google Play prepaid voucher. Pay using cash or any other form of payment accepted by the retail store and receive a redemption code that you can use to purchase digital content on Google Play.

With Google Play, you can buy apps, games, e-books and rent or buy movies, on the device of your choice — be it a computer, Android phone or tablet. All of this entertainment is available across multiple devices — buy an e-book on the web, for example, and it’s instantly available on your phone or tablet through Google Play, and you can start reading right where you left off.

Consumers can access, purchase or rent (in case of movies) this digital content in a variety of ways:

On Android devices: Android phone and tablet users can click on the Google Play store app to shop for e-books, movies, apps and games. Digital content purchased can be “pinned” to the device for offline use without a data connection;
On the web: Users of Chromebooks, PCs, Macs and all other computers can access their digital content online through the web version of Google Play (play.google.com).

You can use Google Play prepaid vouchers to purchase your favorite apps and digital content, as well as in-app goods in your favorite games. Visit http://play.google.com/redeem to redeem your vouchers.

Waiting for this to become more widespread. Its long overdue. No mention of validity though so that is an open question.

Never been comfortable about attaching my credit card to a google account of a mobile device.

Finally. Good for ppl who are not comfortable saving their CC details with Google.
Only if they can be a little flexible on the prepaid voucher amount and not restrict it to 500 and above.
I think it should be 50 and multiples of 50.

Good beginning. Wish that they will make a gift card of any denomination, like a VCC.
And, why limit it to a few cities - they can sell the vouchers online too.

At the least the wallet should be better than paytm - too many complaints of cash being skimmed off.

Good beginning by Google. India being in top 10 countries for applications downloaded through play store needed this to push it into paid app categories.

now only if they add 3D SecureCode integration on their payment gateway. That will really help them alot. Don't know whats stopping them to do that.

They might be thinking that if a person can use his card to buy voucher online then why not directly use the card online at Play store for purchases. I believe that this voucher thing is mostly to bring those people onboard and make them do purchases who either dont own cards or dont do online transactions at all.

These have just started selling at Spice Hotspot stores.

That's because of Axis bank, not because of Google. Only a couple of banks have gateways to support Google payment system AFAIK. And expecting Google to change payment system is better than expecting the Indian banks to change their system to support Google.

Back in June, Google launched prepaid cards in India that could be redeemed on its Play Store. Today, the company has taken a step forward by launching ‘Google Play Gift Cards’ that can be bought at offline stores, as well as e-commerce site.

Unlike the prepaid vouchers, the Play Gift Cards are available in dominations of Rs 750, Rs 1,000, and Rs 1,500. These Gift Cards are available offline retail stores namely Spice Hotspot, Vijay Sales, Planet M, Planet Mobile and Sangeetha Mobiles. Alternatively, one can also head to Snapdeal and buy a Gift Card with cash on delivery option.

These vouchers are the same as the prepaid cards that were launched earlier this year, and they can be used to purchase apps, games, movies or games. These cards essentially circumvent the hassle of using a debit or credit card. All one needs to do is launch the Google Play Store and swipe from the left of the screen. Tap on the newly introduced redeem option, enter the code of your Google Play Gift Card and start downloading any digital content from the Store.
