    Need info on Airtel NOP

I have activated the airtel NOP service on my airtel number here in Pune. The CC guy told me it is unlimited and can be used only on phone for full fledged internet but downloads will be charged.

I am able to access net properly through opera mini browser but want to know this download part.

I mean if say i download a 5MB Song than am i charged or what ?

Because normal data transfers are also downloads right ?

Re: Which GPRS service in Pune (and can be used in Mumbai also)

Aircel provides unlimited internet in 98 rs which gives internet acces on mobile as well as PC. Speed is good and can reach upto 230kbps here if you get full coverage. however i dont whether it works during roaming or if you are in mumbai.

You have second option of BSNL GPRS which also gives good speed anywhere in pune but you need postpaid connection for the same. they cost rs 200 for unlimited GPRS. I dont know about charges when person is in mumbai but as per their condition they charge 10p/10KB during roaming.

Unlimited !! But speeds really vary like crazy !

I am using it in Mumbai, seems fine at some places and sucks at others.

Used it in Hyderabad last week, same experience !

    Aircel ain't consistent yet.

So finally which one to take ??

My primary mobile number is of airtel and i had activated NOP on that which works fine if i am near the tower but never gets connected when i am at home.

Also about Aircel, for 98 rupees it is unlimited browsing. But AFAIK browsing also involves transfer of data, in the same way what if I download a file / song etc, how are they going to find and charge me for that ???

It means you get completely unlimited internet access for Rs 98. You can download or browse, from phone or from PC, doesn't matter. You won't be charged anything.

In most cases when the CC says 'surfing is free but downloads might be charged' it means that the your net usage is free from the ISP/ phone company but you might be charged by websites or other providers for content.

Bang on target. These guys have their own portal for downloading tones, wallpapers, themes etc but when we have unlimited internet access, why will someone download from their paid site? We can get those from other free sites anyway.

    @Raksrules

I am using both aircel and BSNL Gprs and find BSNL provides very consistent speed while aircel speed fluctuates in some areas.

Re: Which GPRS service in Pune (and can be used in Mumbai also)

^^ But i suppose BSNL is on postpaid connection right ???

Also since i shuttle between Mumbai and Pune, i will need something which has network at both places.

I read in couple of places that with Aircel 98 rupees GPRS you cannot browse on phone browsers like opera mini. How true is it ???

Re: Which GPRS service in Pune (and can be used in Mumbai also)

@Roxtin : I have used the Reliance GSM GPRS on a windows mobile phone. The speeds are quite good but the since it works through a proxy a lot of stuff doesnt work with it. They have even reduced the rates but the proxy thing still hurts.

@rakrules : Idea has a good GPRS service but their charges are the highest I think. I used to have a GPRS plan where Rs 200 used to get me 500mb but now thats gone up to Rs 399. This was on postpaid. Their prepaid plans are even crazier.

Then I've tried BSNL for GPRS. Its not as fast as Idea but it is pretty consistent. If you have a postpaid connection you can opt for the unlimited GPRS @ RS 200 a month. On prepaid the charges are 5p/10kb, even though the BSNL website says there is a Rs 230/- voucher for unlimited GPRS, the ppl at the BSNL office in Nasik seem to know nothing about it.

I have even given TATA DOCOMO a try, again good speeds but the stupidest plans ever. First they announced Rs 90 gets you unlimited GPRS for a month, then they said oops, Rs 90 gets you 100mb for a month and then their site says this voucher isnt applicable in Maha, Goa and Mumbai ( I never went to the store to confirm).

I was going to give Aircel a try but then I had to come to Uncle Sam's land for some work.

I can totally understand your situation, using GPRS in Pune and Mumbai, as I have spent a lot of time in Nasik and Mumbai and I was in a similar situation as you a for quite a while. And from experience I can say that the most VFM solution i've had so far is BSNL prepaid. I havent tried Aircel, so if you happen to give it a try, keep us updated!
