I am looking for a good 40" LCD TV in the 1 - 1.5 Lac range in Sony, Samsung or LG, mainly for watching DVD movies, HD Channels and playing games. Visited a few show rooms in my area and everyone pointed me to the Sony W450A and X450A models.
Sales people recommend only Sony for picture quality, sharpness and contrast. Being relatively new to the LCD arena its hard for me to make any choice. Just have a feeling that there might be something better and new models coming around in the few months for which I should wait a little longer. Remember seeing some posts on the Sony 550A models but I dont know if thats going to fit my bill.
Its also hard to imagine that in all showroom displays Sony looks better than Samsung.
Pro's please advice and help me in my decision making.

Take a good look at these
LED TV - Television | SAMSUNG
The LEDs look definitely superior to the LCDs. With black levels very close to those of plasmas.

From the looks of it the TV's look amazing and also have comparable features to the Sony X series which are probably based on the LED technology.
Did you get a chance for a demo of the Samsung's and compare with Sony in terms of picture quality.
I am planning to visit a Samsung showroom to get some idea of how this compares to Sony (based on my earlier visit).

Although the V550A comes packed with BE3 it doesn't mention about the refresh rate and whether it uses a 8/10 bit panel. CCFL alos seems a little out-dated compared to other new technologies.

well those LED tvs are just normal lcd tvs with LED edge/backlight,while they can give black levels that may be better then normal lcds but only in some cases since these are not local dimming led that we find in sony X450A 46inch and upwards .so while they can dim the LED the whole row will be affected so mostly we will actualy loose shadow detail and contrast in some parts of the screen.remember these are edge mounted LED that uses a diffuser to evenly distribute the light.unlike the X450A which uses a array of led just behind the screen that can be indivudualy turned on and off and secondly sony uses a RGB led so it increases the color gamot to a different level.
so in the samsung LED tvs in order to have no loss in shadow detail u will have to disable the dynamic contrast.which will force the LEDs to give uniform light instead of dimming.
however the new samsung LUXIA 9 series will have local dimming aimed at the sony X450A.
so from what i have seen the present samsung LED tvs available in india are good for a power effiecieny and the overall aesthectics.

well u can't noticable the difference b/w a tv that has 8 bit and 10bit panel.but the samsung 6 series does have 100hz motion plus which increase the motion resolution .
the sony V series is aimed at samsung 5 series while the sony W series is aimed at samsung 6 series.
so u will have to wait for the new samsung B650A or the sony W550 and WE5.
the x450A does have the edge compared to other lcds in india, it has superior contrast(46inch version) and image processing the only 2 lcd tvs in india that can achieve full 1080lines of motion resolution are the sony Z series and sony X series.

Great explaination Adder; Thanks a bunch. So it just means I should wait for the new babies (B650A and W550, WE5) to show up soon. Heard that the WE5 is already out in the UK. Any insight about the timeframe when these are going to pop up in India?

well the WE5 will have the same price tag as the samsung LED lcd 6 series ,in order to be competitve in power efficiency sony uses a improved verision of CCFL backlight.
the B650 will be available in a months time ,but the W550 may take a bit longer via the official route since sony just launched the W450A,it will however be available in the grey market.
