GNOME 2.26 is the latest version of the GNOME Desktop: a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME's focus is ease of use, stability, and first class internationalisation and accessibility support. GNOME is Free and Open Source Software and provides all of the common tools computer users expect of a modern computing environment, such as e-mail, groupware, web browsing, file management, multimedia, and games.

Gnome provides lots of new features making it a solid desktop for day to day use , few of them are :
  • Brasero Disc burning software is now the default burning software for Gnome desktop environment..
  • GNOME 2.26 now includes a plugin for its file manager to enable simple personal file sharing over WebDAV, HTTP and Bluetooth.
  • Evolution now has the ability to MS outlook [PST] format and now support Microsoft Exchange's MAPI protocol.
  • Several Media Player enhancement ..
  • Pulseaudio is now the default routeing and mixing application for Gnome.
  • Easy setup utility for multiple monitors.
  • Video Calls are now supported by Empathy IM client..
  • GNOME's web browser, Epiphany, gains an exciting new feature of an improved location bar, similar to the Awesome Bar popularised by Firefox 3.0.
  • GNOME 2.26 now integrates with the fprintd fingerprint service to allow users to enroll fingerprints for use in authentication.

Gnome-2.26 are all performance fixes ,I guess and Gnome is now miles ahead in bug fixes compared to kde.Gnome is going the way windows does - to be too easy to newbie as well as pro users.
An Ideal Workstation.
I read Gnome- 2.30 will be the Gnome's Leap to New toolkit(GTK-3.0+ ) as well as the Gnome-3.0(Hopefully!).All wishes.

I would like to try GARNOME or Jhbuild to compile latest Gnome .but too old to have the patience ;)
