My old creative speaker working fine under XP but Vista does not have driver for it. I need new set of speakers which have x64 Vista compatible drivers.
I have asus P5B dlx wifi mobo which has on board sound (Soundmax AD1988) which supports DTS 7.1 channels
The speakers I am looking for either should work with Soundmax drivers or else I might have to buy dedicated sound card along with speakers.
I don't game at all, but a big time music lover so need it mainly for listening music so i guess 5.1 is all I need.
Ideally these speakers should be able to work with computer, DVD players & connect to LCD tv which I will be buying soon. Not sure what kind of jack will connect but I read that now days the speaker connect vis usb port.

I have a creative (Live Value!) sound card 6 yrs old, with 4.1creative speakers which works with XP perfectly.
Nowdays we have usb speakers too which would need drivers too so I mentioned speakers (hardware) should be compatible with Vista x64.

My budget is either 4-5K if I get what I want else, I can stretch to 8-12K.

Under vista it works as 2 channel only so I tinkered with the settings of Soundmax audio settings & finally I can now get the 4.1 working but the rear speaker have 70% less sound so I have to artificially boost the settings, is there any software which can simulate the 4.1 audio & boost the rear speakers?

what the hell you are trying man...
i am also having P5b Dlx wi-fi and onboard sound works perfectly fine with 5 channels with z5500. you dont need sound card.
i had audigy2 but its not working for me... so currently on onboard HD sound only. why you want to try crappy audigy 2 value...
i have even tested SPDIF but its 2 channel only....
waiting for new mobo upgrade next year or may be new sound card like Xonar

digging the old thread
Need some help I bought altec lansing VS3251 & cant get them working with asus on board sound in 5.1 channel.
It only works in 2.1 channel same was the problem with my creative speakers & I thought that since vista drivers were not available that might be the problem. Now the same is happening with altec speakers & I am suspecting either the mobo ports are not working or the driver is messing up. I installed the soundmax x64 bit driver but its not showing me the audio control panel which it use to show earlier as I posted a screen shot of it.
I connected the base unit its powered up & changed the audio setting from control panel>sound 2.1 to 5.1 but no sound coming from rear & center speakers.
Here is a diagram of mobo

I connected the cords as follows.
green to port 7
orange to port 4
black to port 5
only port 7 gives 2.1 sound
if I plug the black (rear speaker cord into the green port I get no sound)
i am able to only use green cord/port7 in 2.1 channel & along with that my sub woofer gives sound too without even connecting the sub woofer cord (orange cord)
For reference here is an image of the rear ports of 3251

Do I need a sound card for 5.1 speakers to work properly or can this be done with onboard sound card.
Something is wrong but i cant figure out what?
Need help i am going crazy without proper sound even after spending for new speakers.
NOTE
I mainly need the surround speakers for music (mostly Mp3+ CDs) & will share them with Tatasky STB making a home theater. if these are not going to work which speakers should I buy.
There are dedicated home theater speakers which can work with computer using auidoin/out ports from computer, should I opt for those kind, what r the advantage, I saw few at Croma electronics store.
Update
I called up the dealer & he tells me that I have to buy Rs 20/- audio adaptor which will convert 2.1 to 5.1 output. I haven't seen it but I guess he will give me a adaptor which will let me add front & rear output into 1 jack & all 4 speakers would then work, but there must be way to get real 5.1 output from this mobo.
anyone using these speaker can you tell me how are you getting 5.1 output?

Partly sorted out the problem, I uninstalled the soundmax drivers, disabled the onboard card & then enabled & it asked for the driver & it downloaded automatically from MS site now I am getting 5.1 sound but a funny thing is that if I am on surround 5.1 mode the subwoofer does not give much bass output (its too week), when I press the stereo button the sound goes 2.1 with good subwoofer output.
Does subwoofer not work in 5.1 mode as loud its in 2.1 mode or is it still some driver problem?
