Ok, so an uncle of mine needs a new CPU cos his old celeron 600Mhz CPU has finally given up the ghost
Needs:
Songs, movies.
Internet browsing.
Hardly any gaming.
Only need the CPU unit, nothing else. All other old components will be recycled and used (CRT/APC UPS/speakers/keyboard/mouse)
I am leaning for a basic AMD dual core setup here, for the better IGP available, though I am not convinced on buying the 780G yet, 4.5k mobo seems overkill for his use :P
Intel suggestions are welcome too :)
So items required:
1. Cabby (will get basic one, so no suggestions :P)
2. PSU: Either powersafe 400W or generic cabby one depending on budget. Hardly any major power draw so lets c ;)
3. Proccy + Mobo: Dual core + decent IGP is default nowadays I guess ;)
4. RAM: Prob transcend sticks 2Gb? Might be overkill :P else 1Gb only ;) 667/800 watever is cheaper.
5. HDD: 250Gb single platter seagate seeing only 300 Rs diff between the 160 n the 250.
5. DVD-Writer: Cheapest one :P prob samsung/LG. He might have one already with him in the old box. Lets c.
I miss anything?

Hey, i saw this at Deltapage.com
Intel D945GCLF-ATOM board + cel 1.6 + Fan 3400
why dont you go for this instead. this must be able to handle all the stuff you have mentioned with ease.
this is the write up for atom at the intel website..
Intel® Atom™ Processor: Intel's Smallest Chip
Perhaps you can build a super small rig and surprise your uncle.

EEEEEEEEEE....
come on ppl, my def of basic is a bit higher than these ;)
Hes moving up from a celeron, so no ATOM plz :)
no sempron. me definitely going dual core min. His daughter dabbles in animation a bit. so some horsepower would be welcome. I guess a dual core would be a blessing after a 600Mhz celeron

If you are going dual core then intel E2160+NV7050(zebronics) [3000+2400] & amd 4000+ dual core + jetway 690G motherboard[2600+3000]. Ram has gotten a lot cheaper now so 2GB is affordable.

hmmm... much better :D
I m thinkin bout the 4000+ paired with the jetway 690G. 780G will be too exp.
On intel side, Doubt i ll get the 7050 zebby or even biostar here locally. wat options do I have for the 7050 mobos? Tho i believe the 690G is a better option than the 7050. So might end up with AMD again ;)

:hap5: You ask basic , we give basic..
anyways, yeah an x2 paired with the 780G would do nicely.
get the 780G as it has a GPU which may aid the animation related apps.

aight. lets see then
X2 4200+ 3k
Drop the 690G/780G idea. for "hardly any gaming" , a 6100 board will do quite nicely. I use one .mine gigabyte should cost <2.5k these days
2GB ram- 2k
250Gig HDD - 2.5k
Writer Samsung SH 203D - 1.2k
Cabinet- buy something nice for the man. set 3k for a good cabby + PSU :D
The prices are a bit inflated, intentionally, since small town dealers will do the same :P
EDIT:Correction! I use 2 6100's. the second one is the corporate edition called the Quadro NVS210S I have at work

minor mods, esp considerin ur total is goin to 14k :P
AMD 4000+ if cheaper ;)
basic 1k cabby
1Gb RAM
MOBO: Asus has the M2N-VM (I think :ashamed:) for ~3k GF7050 and DVI :) (future proofing, 6100 seems too old :()
Powersafe 400W
Shud manage hopefully < 12.5k
seems balanced. What do you think?
Alternative would be 2Gb RAM and generic PSU. Basic Rig after all, but me thinks he can always add a Gb later :P

well i thought 12k+ 1.6k PSU = ~14k. and as i said , I've slightly increased the prices.
ASUS ? you really want to push your luck? try gigabyte/MSI/Jetway. personally, i like GB boards :)
yes, for such a basic config, whatever PSU comes with the cabby ( as long as it isnt zebronics ) will do :)

2. Asus seems most readily avl :( Availability is the issue na. Lemme c if i can get MSI/GB. Jetway is rashi too :P
3. Hmmm...so the 2Gb RAM and generic PSU, or maybe a VIP silver 400W @ 500Rs if I have something left over ;)

hmm, in that case , a gig less of ram. 1GB is quite adequate, unless you plan to run vista ,aand even then you can add later
dont skimp on UPS. get an APC!

Dell is the best option. He won't eat your head if anything goes wrong and won't blame you for a bad purchase.
Otherwise
AMD X2 4000
690G
1GB RAM
