Massive 6TB My Book Studio Edition II External Drive Unveiled by Western Digital

Source: Massive 6TB My Book Studio Edition II External Drive Unveiled by Western Digital - Softpedia

The increase in the amount of storage provided by HDDs has led to a similar phenomenon affecting external storage solutions, one of the latest examples of this trend being provided by Western Digital, who's just made official the My Book Studio Edition II, providing a whopping 6TB of storage space.

According to Western Digital, this very large-size external storage solution has been designed specifically to meet the needs of users who're faced with very large amounts of HD video and photo content almost on a daily basis, most of which are also Mac users.

Given this situation, the new external storage solution from WD is fully compatible with Apple's Time Machine backup application, while also coming packed with plenty of connectivity options.

So, beside the high-speed eSATA and FireWire 800 ports, that should really come in handy for fast-speed data transfers, the new external storage solution from Western Digital has also been equipped with FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, that will work with a wider range of older devices.

Despite providing such a large amount of storage space, the new storage solution from WD packs the company's GreenPower Technology, which enables it to require one-third less power than standard dual-drive external storage systems, while in the same time, generating a lower level of noise, which some users might find to be extremely useful.

Additional features worth mentioning include the presence of an automatic and continuous backup software, as well as a capacity gauge that will allow users to know at all times just how much storage space there's left in the device.

MSRP for the My Book Studio Edition II 6 TB drive is $549.99 USD, which, to be honest, is not even that high a price, especially taking into account the tremendous amount of storage space this thing can provide.

Considering that WD markets the MyBook Studio editions for Macs the lack of USB 3.0 support is not "phail" as you so eloquently put it. I wonder however, the reasoning behind not implementing Thunderbolt on this platform/drive.
    meh.

    ^^

Thunderbolt has not even come out on any mainstream device and seeing that as of now only Intel and Apple back it it has an uphill battle its way. USB 3.0 might end up sending it the Firewire way.

That's what I am wondering, everyone is aware about the non-availability of Thunderbolt hardware in the market, although since WD has already pledged support for the interface, makes one wonder if it would have been wiser to delay this Studio II edition to implement Thunderbolt in it. After all, it is their flagship (IMHO) Mac external drive.

Oh well, I guess they'll just do it at the next product refresh.
    meh.
