Thumbs Down USB 2.0 Woes

Hi Guys,

I'm having this weird usb 2.0 problem . I have an M2NVM-DH motherboard from ASUS & running an Windows XP Pro + SP2 on it. I got 4 USB ports behind & 2 ahead. Initially all 4 usb ports behind used to work at USB 2.0 speeds. Now they only work at USB 1.1. Whenever I plugin in something behind to any of the ports it says " THis device can perform faster ..... ". This is on all ports behind.

Now the front ports also used to read usb 2.0 earlier. Now both do not read saying "Device Malfunctioned....." Once in a while it worked at USB 1.1 & very rarely at USB 2.0, now it only charges my ipod but does not read it. I've tried updating the Bios, auto updating drivers etc, nothing worked .

Btw this happened on my previous rig also. Now the current rig is completely new. I could not find any solution on the net.

Please advise.

In BIOS there should be a setting to change the USB speed to 2.0... Look this in your mobo manual...

it may be USB controller got some damage..not sure thou

I had a strange issue with my comp..
all of sudden USB stoped detecting portable drives and stuffs which used to draw power from it and works

things worked ware 1) ipod 2) usb thumb drives
i struggled a lot... thank god..my MB blew off in lightning
and i got a new 1 ..back to normal now

Then i understood it was because of controller letting less power to USB ports.

Back to your issue, USB 2.0 driver comes with Vista and XP SP1, so ideally you dont need a driver from MB. it could be somthing else check out your bios.

Could be driver corruption or power issue. I once did an online update of my USB driver from the Device Manager to solve such an issue. Maybe you can try navigating to Universal Serial Bus controllers. If there is no "Enhanced" Host controller, you can try the "Update Driver" option on one of the entries present.

If it is a power issue, for your front USB, it could be that the header connections from the motherboard to the front USB ports are loose. You could try tightening the connections on the mobo side and see if it works.

i have a corsair 550 watts PSU. Initially once my mobo had conked off due to power surge from the internet cable. ONboard lan card had conked off. Thanks to Rashi Peripherals it took 2 months to come back %@#$%

However, after that also it worked for sometime...in the BIOS usb setting is both 1.1 & 2.0 + Legacy support. No other option I could find in BIOS.

In the device manager, under Universal Serial Bus, I jus have the following

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Unknown Device (No idea what this is)
USB Mass storage device (1tb external WD My book connected behind USB port running at 1.1 speeds )
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

As far as I remember, XP sp2 has all necessary USB 2.0 drivers....many ppl face this issue. Anybody tried anything with real success??

I think both the solutions, re-installing USB drivers (mobo chipset drivers) and PSU... are most effective ones. In one of my systems, re-installing chipset drivers (Intel INF drivers) solved the issue while in one of my old systems PSU was the culprit.

I think you should also check the connection on mobo for your front USB woes... I've noticed most the time, that bad connection is main culprit for front USB issues.

I somehow feel it's a PSU issue.

Did you overload the USB ports before? Like 3-4 USB devices in one go ?

if ur hard disk is making funny noise, usb 2.0 conked off, constant freezes(bsod)-northbridge is about to RIP. but there can be also other possibilities
