Need help regarding PSU and UPS

I am planning to buy pov black diamond 500w PSU.
I have APC 500VA UPS now, my doubt is my UPS will support this PSU are i need to upgrade my UPS?

My rig is
C2D E7500
GA ES2L board
8400 512 MB
4GB corsair RAM 800mhz
Creative sound blaster card 5.1
HDD, DVD Drive

Corsair vx 550w - 5.5k ( futureproof for Ati 5850,5870, GT 300)
Corsair vx 450 - 4k
Gigabyte 460w ( only if u r on a extremely tight budget )

But please buy vx 550w for futureproofing ur system

My friend was sale 3 months old this black diamond so that i decide to buy this PSU.

My question is I need to change my APC UPS for this PSU?

There is a chance that the UPS will still be good, even with the bigger power supply. Just because the power supply is 500W, it doesn't mean it will actually go that high, that's just its maximum. Most likely, it will only use about 250-300W during normal operation.


Now if you have a unit like the Back UPS CS 500 which has 300W and your power supply uses 250-300W, you'd only have a run time of 2.5-3.0minutes. That's not a lot but it could be enough to save your work and shut down, and protect your computer from power anomalies during normal operation.

However, if your configuration becomes much heavier, you could overload the unit.


Personally, I would recommend trying to run with the current UPS. If you find that you're overloading it, then start looking for a bigger unit.

and i am planning to buy quadcore and new GPU in future is POV PSU enough to handle these.

Warning : APC 500VA gives max output 300W which implies that your PSU can only deliver a max 250W. So decide carefully.

Ok if i connect 500w PSU in APC 500VA ups which one will be affect PSU or UPS?

If your machine demands more than 250W, the PSU will try to extract more than 300W ( more depending on the efficiency of the PSU ). That could lead into a probable blow up of APC.

P.S. - I assumed that you won't connect any other peripherals like monitors, speakers to the UPS.

If the PSU tries to draw more than the UPS can provide, the unit will simply overload and pop a circuit. Nothing should blow up. The overload light on the unit will light up and the unit will beep non stop. You'll have to reset it.

Unless you run your PC fully loaded, you shouldn't reach 300W. You won't have much run time but you will be able to safely shut down.

That's correct. If the PSU pulls in more than 300W, your UPS will overload and won't support your load. You'll need to replace the unit with a bigger one.

I would personally recommend going to a Smart UPS, a minimum of a Smart UPS 750. The Smart UPS series of UPSs are much better than the Back UPS CS or other Back UPS CS series. They output a sine wave and regulate power and filter better. If you're going to buy a similar unit to the one you have, try a Back UPS RS 1300. It's 780W, a bit above your maximum demand. This would be good because it's not recommended to have a UPS run at more than 80% capacity. A unit similar to this would serve you well.
